Real Madrid Foundation to Open Three Social Sports Schools in Tunisia

Mohamed Zribi, director general of social promotion of the Tunisian Ministry of Social Affairs, announced that the Real Madrid Foundation (RMF) will establish three Social Sports Schools in Tunisia.

Zribi stated that the schools will be located in the cities of Tunis, Kasserine, and Sidi Bouzid. “The foundation wanted to help Tunisia through sports as a means of integrating youth in the society. In the coming months the Real Madrid Foundation and the ministry will begin the preparations for the opening of the schools,” he stated.

In cooperation with local partners, RMF has established schools in over 60 countries. In Tunisia, a number of development organizations will be working with the Ministry of Social Affairs to coordinate this project. “These schools are established for the social integration of their pupils. It is envisioned that the target age group of the schools’ children would be between 6 and 17, and will be open to both boys and girls,” Zribi added.

The foundation’s primary aim is to educate youth through sports – not only in Spain but also in the rest of the world – and through this, to encourage the values that one acquires from participating in sports. RMF Social Sports Schools specifically target children and adolescents who are at risk of social exclusion, or who have suffered from violence and conflict.

In Tunisia, the inhabitants of Kasserine and Sidi Bouzid suffer from high rates of unemployment and poverty. Historically marginalized under the former regime of Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali, these two cities, located in the country’s southeastern region, could stand to benefit from the social program that the RMF schools promote.

The philosophy of the schools is not to train athletes or players, but to promote the social development of vulnerable youth through athletics, providing positive leisure-time alternatives and encouraging healthy lifestyles and habits for the younger generations.
