Apple’s Tim Cook faces leadership challenge on labor issues
Apple CEO Tim Cook went to China this week to meet with vice premier Li Keqiang and tour its supplier factories in the country. He had (ahem) uncanny timing: His trip came just before the release Thursday of a new report from the Fair Labor Association, a monitor group that investigated working standards at Foxconn, one of Apple’s major suppliers. The study found at least 50 issues related to the organization’s code of conduct and Chinese labor law, namely the number of hours worked per week by Foxconn workers. The average time worked at each of the three factories in question was more than 60 hours per week during peak production periods.

At 2012 Masters at Augusta, a shot at breaking the old boys club
When the 2012 Masters opens next week, much will be the same in Augusta. The azaleas will be blooming. Green blazers, those sartorial markers of prestige, will be worn by the club’s members and be placed on the winner’s shoulders. And the pimiento-cheese sandwiches will still be insanely cheap.

JetBlue’s pilot fiasco gives airline another crash course in leadership
If you had a bad day yesterday, imagine what it would have been like to be on JetBlue Airways Flight 191 — or a company executive dealing with its aftermath on the ground. One of the airline’s pilots began behaving erratically in the cockpit, and then, after being locked out of the cockpit by the airline’s co-pilot, ran through the cabin yelling about Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and al-Qaida. Passengers, a number of whom were on their way to (get this) a security conference in Las Vegas, restrained the pilot as the co-pilot safely landed the plane. The event sounds like something out of a movie. Make that a horror film, if you were on the plane or trying to manage the crisis from the ground.

Rick Santorum’s reporter comment and the leadership dilemma of the modern campaign
Rick Santorum, in case you missed it, got angry at a New York Times reporter Sunday, cursing at him and saying the reporter was “lying” when he asked a question. Depending on your perspective, the outburst was a sign that Santorum’s ornery ways are back, a symptom of the pressure that’s setting in as Mitt Romney looks increasingly likely to win the GOP nod, or, in Sarah Palin’s words, illustrative of Santorum’s strong character.

Spring may have lovely weather, but it also brings its share of headaches, from allergies to tax deadlines. And for the corporate boards of directors who make decisions about executive compensation, it’s the time of year when pay surveys reveal to the world just how much largesse they’ve decided to bestow upon their CEOs.
