Military trials resume in Guantanamo

We look at the debate surrounding military vs. civilian trials.

In 2009, President Obama promised to close the Guantanamo Bay detention center and stated his desire to try the defendants in civilian courts. The Pentagon recently announced that reformed military trials for the five Sept. 11 suspects will resume at Guantanamo Bay next month, leading many to question whether the proceedings will be as fair as civilian trials.

In this episode of The Stream, we talk to Cully Stimson, Senior Legal Fellow at Heritage Foundation; Hina Shamsi, Director of the ACLU National Security Project; and Moazzam Begg, a former Guantanamo detainee and Director of Cage Prisioners.

What do you think? Will the military trials be fair? Send us your thoughts and comments on Facebook or Twitter using hashtag #AJStream.
