The French investigative website Mediapart has just published its latest report supporting the allegations that Nicolas Sarkoy, seeking re-election in the May 6 presidential election, illegally received 50 million euros ($65.8mn) from the former Libyan lead Muammar Gaddafi as a contribution to his 2007 presidential campaign.

In the article, published quotes Baghdadi Ali al-Mahmoudi, the former Libyan prime minister currently in exile in Tunisia:

"I confirm that there is indeed a document signed by Moussa Koussa and that the payment was indeed received by M. Sarkozy."

Mexico stopped Muammar Gaddafi's son Saadi from entering the country, a spokesperson for the Mexican government has announced.

Several people alleged to have been involved in a plan to enter Mexico were arrested.

Niger's President Mahamadou Issoufou said on Friday he had granted Muammar Gaddafi's son Saadi asylum on humanitarian grounds but did not know the location of another fugitive son Saif al-Islam, South African media reported.

The announcement will strain already troubled relations between Niger and Libya's interim rulers, who overthrew Muammar Gaddafi after an eight month uprising and want both sons to stand trial for alleged atrocities.

Saadi, a businessman and former professional footballer, is in Niger after escaping across the border from Libya when National Transitional Council (NTC) forces captured the capital Tripoli in August.

"We have agreed on granting asylum to Saadi Gaddafi for humanitarian reasons," the South African Press Association (SAPA) quoted Issoufou telling a news conference at the end of a two-day visit to South Africa. [Reuters]

Inspectors at the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons say that Libyan authorities have alerted them of suspected chemical weapon stockpiles that despoded leader Muammar Gaddafi may have gone unreported in a 2004 declaration.

In a statement on Friday, the Organization says that no chemical weapons were looted during the uprising that led to Gaddafi's eventual fall. [AP]

The UN Security Council is urging Libyan authorities to prevent shoulder-fired missiles and other arms purchased by Muammar Gaddafi from getting into the hands of armed groups.

The Russian-drafted resolution adopted unanimously by the council on Monday also calls on the Libyan government to destroy chemical weapons stockpiles in coordination with international authorities.

Andrew Shapiro, the US assistant secretary of state, said earlier this month that Libya was believed to have about 20,000 such missiles in its arsenals before civil war began in March.

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi will not escape justice and should be tried in Libya for murder, corruption and "many things" before an international court questions him, the country's interim justice minister said on Monday.

Mohammed al-Alagi said he did not want Saif al-Islam, now on the run, to meet the same fate as his father, former leader Muammar Gaddafi, who was beaten, abused and shot after forces of Libya's National Transitional Council captured him on October 20.

But he said anything could happen if there was a battle when Saif al-Islam was found.

Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the NATO secretary general, has hailed the end of the alliance's military intervention in Libya.

Rasmussen, who travelled to Tripoli, spoke to Al Jazeera about NATO’s decision to end its mission in Libya, where it had operated under a UN Security Council mandate to protect civilians there.

He said that "a significant threat against civilian populations no longer existed in Libya".

"We have fulfilled UN mandate and prevented massacre of Libyan population. The mission was a great success," he said.

A German telecommunications firm has ended a major advertising contract with a model who said she was a long-time fiance of Muammar Gaddafi's son, Mutassim, and for praising the former Libyan leaders family.

Telefonica Germany spokesman Albert Fetsch said on Monday the company's subsidiary Alice will stop working with the 23-year old Italian model Vanessa Hessler and remove her face from its website within hours.

Hessler had been the company's advertising face for years.

Fetsch says Hessler “has failed to distance herself from her comments on the conflict in Libya”.

Mutassim was killed in Libya this month, after being captured alongside his father.

Hessler told Italian magazine Diva e Donna that she had been dating Mutassim for four years.

NATO has formally announced the end of its military campaign in Libya, seven months after launching an air and sea operation that helped in the overthrow and death of Muammar Gaddafi.

Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the NATO secretary general, announced the end of the mission in the Libyan capital Tripoli on Monday.

“I had a meeting which none of us could have imagined a year ago. I had a meeting with [NTC] chairman Mustafa Abdul Jalil. We discussed the successful mission that NATO and partners conducted over last seven months to save people of Libya,” Rasmussen said.

Jalil thanked Rasmussen for the successful operation on the behalf of Libyan people.

“Today, we have achieved victory by the grace of God and a resolution has been handed to put an end to NATO operation by midnight,” Jalil said.

Toppled Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's compound in central Tripoli has been demolished.

Gaddafi delivered many of his speeches from the compound, which is thought to be one of the last places he stayed in Tripoli before fleeing.

Anti-Gaddafi fighters say they hope the area will be turned into a park.
