There is growing concern in Syria over sectarianism and the changing nature of the uprising.

A new group called al-Nusra has claimed several recent bombings and says it wants to destroy the Alawite government of President Bashar al-Assad.

But as Laurence Lee explains, al-Nusra's methods could be valuable propaganda for Assad.

As the death toll continues to rise despite the UN-backed ceasefire, opposition activists have little hope that the deployment of international observers will make a difference. Al Jazeera's Steve Chao reports.

Al Jazeera's Rula Amin reports from Beirut on the Damascus blasts. She says a third explosion has been reported in the Adawi area, near the agricultural department of Damascus University, following blasts in al-Midan and al-Sinaa.

"It's not clear yet how serious this explosion was, if there are any casualties or not, but it's confirmed both by pro-government media and activists."

Al Jazeera speaks to author Joseph Kechichian about the crisis in Syria.

Kechichian says "there are no diplomatic options left", and that immediate steps must be taken to avoid "a full fledged civil war" in the country.

Footage of today's attacks across Kabul from ToloNews, a private Afghan television channel. Heavy gunfire and explosions heard as police try to clear three buildings where assailants are holed up.

The UN Security Council has convened to draft a resolution to send observers into Syria.

Al Jazeera’s Cath Turner reports from New York:

“What they want to do first is send about 20-30 advance monitors into Syria, assuming that the ceasefire holds, to be able to gain independent reporting of what the conditions are on the ground back to Kofi Annan and the UN and perhaps a second wave of monitors going after that to start implementing Annan's six-point plan.

“For its part, the Syrian government says it has nothing to hide, and they're happy to approve of this advance monitoring team."

Al Jazeera's Anita McNaught, on the Turkish side of the Turkey-Syria border, comments on the latest reports of violations of the ceasefire.
