This is concerning the Associated Press article, “Vatican orders crackdown on US nun association” (Telegram & Gazette, April 18). More...

I support John McGrath for selectman in Charlton. He recently gave a clear, intelligent and detailed outline of what he would do differently. He knows what steps need to be taken to make the town more efficient and effective. He discussed Chapter 70 funding and its negative effect on our school district. He focused on what resources are needed to develop the Route 20 corridor in order to recruit more businesses and increase the tax base. We need his business expertise and vision for the future to get our town on track. More...

A service to our home was down for some days and required a house call. We were instructed that someone should be home between 1 and 3 p.m., pets restrained and with a photo ID. A photo ID is required for a business, but not at a polling station when voting. What is wrong with this picture? More...

By consuming industry-pasteurized dairy products, the consumer supports inhumane and cruel treatment of one of the most docile useful animals on this planet. It’s frightening how they are tortured. Watch Youtube video; you won’t believe it. Support HR 1830 and allow small farms to compete by transporting their raw milk produced from healthy, happy cows. More...

The photo of the late Dick Clark on Page 2 (Telegram & Gazette, April 19) sparked my curiosity. The caption under the photo says it is from Feb. 3, 1959. That’s the day Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper died in the tragic plane crash. Mr. Clark is holding three 45 RPM records in the photo. I was just wondering if he was holding a record from each of those late, great rock and roll stars. More...

The Massachusetts Adoption Program of Lutheran Social Services has been very fortunate to have three wonderful volunteers from the Retired and Volunteer Program based at the Worcester Senior Center. These tireless volunteers have given our adoption program many hours of dedicated assistance that have enabled Lutheran Social Services and the adoption program to obtain Council on Accreditation certification, and also maintain our Hague Convention adoption accreditation. Their professionalism, discretion and strong work ethic are models for all of us. Lutheran Social Services and its adoption program recently moved to new quarters at 14 East Worcester St. We could not have done it without the assistance of our volunteers. More...

We met John Stevens at a “Meet and Greet” held by Sue and Neil Rivers and believe that he’s an excellent choice for our next Spencer selectman. His four years on the Spencer Finance Committee, along with his financial management and administrative experience make him the perfect candidate. He’s a fiscal conservative who wants to keep our taxes low, but is committed to balancing town revenues and services while preparing for future needs. More...

Incredibly, the administration’s policy from the outset has been to raise oil, gas and coal prices to the point where corn, alga, solar and wind could become viable options to our energy needs. Highly subsidized ethanol, from corn, has not only raised food prices worldwide, but by the time it reaches service stations’ pumps, it has produced more pollution and higher costs than refining pure gasoline alone. The three-deckers on the East Side attract homeless squatters. These dilapidated dwellings have many code violations. On Dec. 8, 2011, the three-decker at 49 Arlington St. was ablaze. Rescue 1, from Franklin Street, responded to the three-alarm inferno. More...

Elizabeth Warren’s opposition to the Secure Communities program puts her out-of-step with the Massachusetts people, our sheriffs and even President Barack Obama. This program is a simple step to assist law enforcement, but Ms. Warren is more concerned about protecting violent illegal immigrants than the average citizen she hopes to represent. More...

Albert B. Southwick’s column, “Catholics and Contraception” (Telegram & Gazette, April 19), begins by taking issue with Bishop Robert McManus in the commencement flap at Anna Maria College, a subject to which he devotes exactly two-and-a-half sentences. After offering a few grains of incense to Catholic contributions in history, we hear the expected litany of “all” the “black marks” against the church even though he notes “the saintly lives of some.” Sympathy is offered to those Catholic bishops who unwillingly go along with papal teaching, but he never says who they are. Finally, we’re transported to 1968, where he excoriates Pope Paul VI for “Humanae Vitae.” More...

I was happy to see the “As I See It” by Charles F. Desmond, “Nurturing the roots of STEM” (Telegram & Gazette, April 13), but please consider students in the lower grades. More...

Shame on Superintendent Melinda Boone for demanding that all faculty members at Claremont Academy reapply for their jobs next year. More...

I’m writing as a concerned parent whose children attend the Dudley-Charlton school system. Our teachers do a tremendous job educating children despite the fact that they are asked to do more with less year after year. Drastic cuts to school funding have resulted in the loss of 29 staff, and reductions in technology, books and more. More...

Mitt Romney has got the best lawyers that money can buy. He’s gaming the system, paying only 13.9 percent income tax — about half of what the average secretary is paying. More...

I want to send this message to every battle in the world right now. I am 17 now. I began to go to school when I was 6 years old. The first thing I learned from my teachers was that there should be no fighting, and everyone should keep the peace in school and outside of school. I believe that every school in the world should teach their children this lesson. So, I still don’t understand why we have to fight wars. No one in the military wants to shoot others with guns. We are human beings and we should strive to develop this world together. More...

Red Sox fans have short memories. They are booing and getting on the wrong person when they should be getting on the three studs, the starting pitchers, 1, 2, 3, and get on the bullpen. More...

An article in the newspaper (Telegram & Gazette, April 17) told a lot about the prescription drug problem in the United States, particularly opiate-based painkillers. What wasn’t mentioned was how the abuse of prescription medicines, and other addictive drugs, affects the families and friends of addicts. More...

This is regarding the Mass Politics column, “Effort to mothball Worcester airport derailed” (Sunday Telegram, April 15). I have to agree with the efforts of minority leader Bruce Tarr (R-Gloucester) in his proposing of an amendment to a transportation bond bill to form a commission to decide the fate of Worcester Regional Airport. More...

With all the noise the media aremaking about Mitt Romney’s wealth, I don’t recall such bluster and hand-wringing over the Kennedy fortune, or, for that matter, Sen. John Kerry’s. Or the fact that Mr. Kerry gave virtually nothing to charity while Mr. Romney gave something on the order of $4 million, in addition to his entire inheritance from his father. More...

We are writing to encourage endorsement of James Kane for a second term to the Shrewsbury Board of Selectmen. He brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to these challenging economic times. He has both the private and public sector experience necessary to chart a sound fiscal direction for the town of Shrewsbury. Mr. Kane is the selectman with a clear plan. He has the ability to communicate and implement a positive course without compromising the quality of life that we, as Shrewsbury residents, value and enjoy. More...

Bishop Robert McManus is to be commended for his stand against Victoria Kennedy being the commencement speaker at Anna Maria College. Lukewarm Catholics and others who do not understand the teachings of the church and its adherence to the moral code in matters of faith and reason are quick to condemn anyone who stands up for what is for the good of humanity and one’s spiritual life. More...

Congratulations to Bishop Robert McManus. He won the battle, but lost the war. The Catholic Church is dying a slow and painful death, and he just added a couple more nails to the coffin. More...

Anna Maria College withdrew its invitation to Victoria Reggie Kennedy to speak at commencement because of the opposition of Bishop Robert McManus. The bishop says that Ms. Kennedy has “associated with political and social organizations that promote activities and points of view contrary to fundamental church teachings.” But he did not name any groups and he produced no evidence that she opposes church teaching. He also refused to meet with Ms. Kennedy to discuss his concerns. Ms. Kennedy in 2004 did take issue with bishops who denied Communion to some Catholic politicians. But many Catholics, including myself and several prominent bishops, also objected to those actions. More...
