CELTICS 87, HAWKS 80
ATLANTA— Paul Pierce knocked down the free throws to clinch it, then dropped to a knee near midcourt. He wasn't planning on Tebowing, but it just felt right. With a stunning performance, Pierce single-handedly led the Celtics to a playoff win — even without their floor leader.

PRESS BOX
Andy Pettitte and Roger Clemens sat some 20 feet apart, Pettitte on the witness stand and Clemens at the defense table trying to avoid going to jail. The topic: a remark about human growth hormone Pettitte recalled hearing from his longtime teammate, mentor and workout partner a dozen years ago.

RED SOX NOTES
Darnell McDonald had one of his biggest nights in a Red Sox uniform, at least offensively, as he was one hit away from the cycle. It was, per usual, the triple.

It took Rajon Rondo only a few seconds to ruin everything — a chance of completing a comeback victory in Game 1, and maybe even the Celtics' entire season. No one cared that Rondo had been the only consistent Boston player in Sunday night's 83-74 loss at Atlanta in the opener of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals.

ATLANTA —  Josh Smith scored 22 points and grabbed 18 rebounds, leading the Atlanta Hawks to an 83-74 victory over Boston in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference playoffs last night, the final minute turning ugly when Celtics star Rajon Rondo was ejected for bumping an official.

WALTHAM —  Paul Pierce knows most NBA fans don’t give the fourth-seeded Celtics much of a chance to last very long in the NBA playoffs. “No added pressure,” the Celtics’ captain said. “It was more pressure being the No. 1 seed, winning the most games going into the playoffs that year than it is now."

WALTHAM —  Even though the Celtics got off to a poor start this season, Wyc Grousbeck never lost faith. “Ownership, the basketball staff, the Celtics organization,” the Worcester native said before the Celtics practiced at HealthPoint Friday, “did not give up on this team and they didn't give up on themselves. They want to shock the world.”

NBA PLAYOFFS
WALTHAM —  Ray Allen shot free throws at HealthPoint yesterday, but once the Celtics began practicing, he did not take part. Allen is anything but a certainty to play at 7 tomorrow night when the Celtics open their best-of-seven Eastern Conference quarterfinal series in Atlanta.

CELTICS 87, BUCKS 74
BOSTON —  The Celtics won their regular-season finale last night, but they lost the home-court advantage. What mattered most to them, however, was that Paul Pierce’s left big toe injury doesn’t appear too serious. The Celtics knocked off Milwaukee, 87-74, at the Garden, but Atlanta dominated Dallas, 106-89, to claim the home-court edge in the opening round of the playoffs.

CELTICS NOTES
BOSTON —  The swelling in Mickael Pietrus's sore right knee subsided enough for him to play in the Celtics' regular-season finale last night, and he doesn't plan to miss any playoff games, no matter what.
