Breaking a Lease for a Haunted Apartment

Thursday April 19, 2012

A family allegedly put up with ghosts for a week before fleeing their New Jersey rental house for the safety of a nearby hotel. According to a report from The Asbury Park Press, the tenants claimed they heard whispering, footsteps, and unusual sounds and would return home to find their clothes mysteriously strewn across the floor.

The tenants are now suing their landlord in state court for the return of their $2,250 security deposit. The landlord, however, doesn't appear spooked and counterclaims that the tenants broke their lease for no valid reason. Noting that no prior tenant has complained of paranormal activity, the landlord reportedly believes the family is just trying to get out of the lease because they realize they can't afford the $1,500 monthly rent.

Do you think a judge should order the landlord to return the security deposit? Or do you think the family hasn't a ghost of a chance?
