What connects America's Jews to Chinese American culture and communities? Such is the question posed by the folks at the Skirball Cultural Center; they're also prepared to answer it in the upcoming exhibit Project Mah Jongg.
The show--which runs from May 17th through September 2nd--explores the age-old game of Mah Jongg through vintage photographs, historical objects, Mah Jongg-inspired artwork, a visitor-activated audioscape, a game table and related instructional programs.
Plan to head over and find out what this simple yet culturally profound game of chance is all about.

There are just cinco days until Cinco de Mayo--the Mexican holiday extravaganza that takes place every May 5th.
Angelenos who find themselves in the mood for a fiesta will likely head to one of LA's great Mexican restaurants--where flautas, tacos, burritos and margaritas await.
One such Mexican eatery--Red O (on Melrose and Kilkea)--will be celebrating Cinco de Mayo with its 'Street Food Social Hour.' Between 3 and 6 p.m. items on chef Rick Bayless' California-Mexican menu will be on offer at special prices in the restaurant's tequila lounge an outdoor patio.
In addition, specialty margaritas and cocktails will be $8; wines: $7 and craft beers: $5.

Hollywood's star may always shine brightly when it comes to film and its related festivals. But once a year, Beverly Hills gets in on the cinematic action with its Beverly Hills Film Festival.
The five-day event dedicated to showcasing the works of indie filmmakers draws circa 20,000 attendees. It also hosts poolside celebrity panels, seminars, and other special events aimed at helping creators network with distributors, investors and representation.
This year's film fest is nearing the finish line; on Sunday it says, 'that's a wrap,' so to speak. So try and catch one of its shorts on Saturday or a feature like the romantic comedy Worth the Weight or the documentary 7 Year's Underground: A 60's Tale (which centers on comedian Lenny Bruce's infamous obscenity charges).

The kids of LA are a sophisticated bunch...so sophisticated that they can even roll their own sushi. Well, at least they'll learn to roll their own sushi if they attend one of the 'Sushi 101 Classes For Kids' at Whole Foods Market in Redondo Beach.
The first of these children's food workshops takes place this Saturday, April 28th from 12-2 p.m. and is hosted by Genji Sushi (who is introducing its Japanese inspired rolls, soups and salads to Whole Foods).
Aspiring kid sushi chefs will learn about the tradition and history of sushi, and its ingredients and creation techniques.
Classes cost $10 per person; all proceeds will be donated to the Whole Planet Foundation (a Whole Foods Market foundation that funds poverty alleviation around the world).
To register please visit the Whole Foods Market Redondo Beach website.
