Ready For a Change?

Deep tissue and Swedish massage are wonderful, but every once in a while it's interesting to try a different kind of massage. Here's a guide to different massages, and a few I enjoy when I'm ready for a change.

Spa Recipes For Breakfast

Monday April 30, 2012

One of the great traditions of Mother's Day is serving mom breakfast in bed, and the big day is coming up May 13. The Destination Spa Group asked chefs from destination spas for some healthy recipes that kids can make for mom. They do look delicious, and healthy, but I think most are beyond the abilities of child chefs. Maybe the muffins will work.

But here's another idea -- try some of these healthy breakfast recipes. And give Dad this pumpkin body scrub recipe I'm pretty sure the kids CAN make with ingredients you already have.

  • From Red Mountain Spa, breakfast burritos have Cotija, a dry, crumbly Mexican cheese sometimes referred to as the "Parmesan of Mexico."

  • From The Oaks at Ojai, these date nut muffins have just only 110 calories each. This is one the kids might be able to handle, with a little supervision from Dad.

Green Mountain Spa And The End of Bingeing

    Monday April 30, 2012

Jacki MonacoI get a lot of spa newsletters, but was particularly happy to see the most recent one from Green Mountain at Fox Run, a women-only weight-loss program in Ludlow, Vermont. Jacki Monaco was at Green Mountain the same time I was, though I was just there for a week, not the entire month that Green Mountain recommends for people who are trying to change a troubled relationship to food.

Jacki is a "Binge Eating Success Story" and has a new blog by Jacki called A Weight Lifted. "I have not had a binge eating episode since I arrived at what I call 'The Place That Changed My Life.'" she says. "I'd love to Read More...

    Healthy Jam Dot Cookie Recipe

    Sunday April 29, 2012

jam dot cookieThis healthy jam dot cookie is one of the most requested recipes to ever come out of Golden Door, a premier destination spa 45 minutes north of San Diego, California. This cookie has the same amount of calories as an Oreo -- about 75 -- but with healthy ingredients that make you slow down and savor the flavor.

For me, Oreos are a childhood comfort food, and it's hard to have just one. Five or six is probably my minimum, should I stumble across them. (This is not something I keep in the the house.) So now you're talking 375-450 calories versus 75.

Oreos are a good example of a "hyperpalatable food" -- an easy-to-eat blend of fat, sugar and salt designed to go down easy, and make you want more. Lots more. New Age Health Spa Closes

New Age Health Spa, a long-time destination spa in Neversink, New York, will not re-open in May 2012 for the summer season. "The economy continues to be a challenge and sadly, we will not be able to do business this year," reads a message on its website.

Once a farm, they property became a juice fasting retreat called New Age Health Farm in 1976. Werner Mendel and Stephanie Paradise purchased the property in 1986 and transformed it into a rustic retreat called New Age Health Spa. Just a few hours from New York City, the spa had struggled in recent years due to Read More...
