Mexican Parks Trade Free Wi-Fi Access for Dog Poop

green design, eco design, sustainable design, poo wifi, Terra, Mexico, poop incentives, DBB, park clean up

Dog poop in public parks can really be the pits – however a new campaign by DDB in Mexico includes a genius incentive to get dog owners to clean up their pup’s leavings. For every “deposit” made in a specially sanctioned receptacle, the surrounding area will get free Wi-Fi, paving the road to the information superhighway with poop.

Short-haired bumblebees (Bombus subterraneus) became exinct in the UK almost 25 years ago, but now scientists are planning to reintroduce them into the countryside. Last weekend, a team of scientists traveled to Sweden to collect around 100 bumblebee queens, with the goal of releasing them in Kent in the south-east of the country. Reports say the species is thriving in the Swedish county of Skåne, where early bee preservation attempts were made in order to conserve areas of wild flowers.

Trees Take Root in Abandoned Silos in American Farming Communities

by Mark Boyer, 04/30/12

Silo trees, silos, trees, abandoned silos, farms, tree growing in silo

Drive down a two-lane highway in the rural Midwest and you’re likely to encounter decaying buildings, maybe a half-collapsed barn, and abandoned silos. Industrial agriculture has reshaped America’s farming communities in recent decades by consolidating resources in fewer and larger farms, leaving abandoned structures from defunct family farms dotting the landscape. And amid the ruins, the New York Times has spotted a surprisingly common sight: abandoned silos with trees growing inside them, or as they’re more commonly known, silo trees.

PRODUCT REVIEW: We Test Out the LED Candle Light You Can Actually Blow Out

by Yuka Yoneda, 04/30/12

Candles can transform nondescript spaces into soothing and romantic scenes, but they can also be a fire waiting to happen (considering 5% of all home fires are started by candles), and a smoky, waxy mess that lowers your indoor air quality. The LED candle light is a product that provides the warm, flattering illumination of the real thing without the worry, smoke and carbon in the air, and unlike a wax candle, it can be reused almost ad infinitum. Even cooler, the latest version of the LED candle doesn’t even need to be turned on and off via a switch – to put out the light, just blow it out. We recently had the chance to test out this clever little gadget which sells for just $4.95 to see how well it could mimic real candlelight. Read on for our full review!
