100 Years of The Neediest Cases Fund
This year marks the 100th anniversary of The New York Times’ Neediest Cases Fund, a nonprofit charity launched by Adolph S. Ochs, a publisher of The New York Times, to aid those in need.
Neediest Cases | Thonn McMillan
Thonn McMillan is a 17-year-old from Grenada who has Wegener’s granulomatosis, a rare disease that causes inflammation of his arteries and veins and has harmed his lungs, kidneys and brains. He and his mother are on visitors’ visas while he is being treated in the United States.

Seven years ago, Ms. Cupid lost part of her leg in a highway accident, and she has been proving her resilience to friends, family, customers and, most important, herself ever since.
A Brief History of The New York Times Neediest Cases Fund
The Neediest Cases Fund celebrated its 100th anniversary this year. Our 100th campaign began Nov. 6, 2011 and ran through Feb. 10, 2012.
The tradition started on Christmas Day, 1911, when Adolph S. Ochs, publisher of The New York Times, went out for a walk after a big turkey dinner and encountered a shabbily dressed man on the street.
The encounter left the publisher thinking about charity. The following year, The New York Times began printing short profiles about those in need. Read More »
