Arab League halts observer mission in Syria

January 28, 2012

The Arab League has announced that it is suspending its monitoring mission in Syria, citing escalating violence. “It has been decided to immediately stop the work of the Arab League’s mission to Syria pending presentation of the issue to the League’s council,” Arab League Secretary-General Nabil El-Araby said today. The move comes days after Saudi Arabia and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states announced the withdrawal of their monitors, citing the non-cooperation of the Syrian government.
