Reuters reports:

Security forces were called to the Saar Area of Bahrain's capital, Manama, on Sunday to secure the area and to check for any possible bomb threat devices as the authorities escalate a crackdown on pro-democracy protesters.

Nabeel Rajab, head of Bahrain Centre for Human Rights (BCHR), who is reported to have been arrested on his return from the Lebanese capital.

Prosecutors questioned the prominent human rights activist and critic of the country's ruling family about his tweets on social media platform Twitter before he was taken to court on Sunday morning on previous charges of organising a protest inside Manama in March, a member of the BCHR told Reuters.

Gulf countries have this morning congratulated Francois Hollande on his election, which has major economic ties with these countries, their official news agencies said Monday.

Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al-Nahayan, president of the United Arab Emirates, sent a telegram wishing Hollande "success" and "further progress in relations" between the two countries, in a statement carried by WAM news agency.

France during Nicolas Sarkozy's rule, bolstered its military ties with the Gulf state since it set up its first permanent military base in Abu Dhabi, the wealthiest and largest of the UAE's seven emirates. But France has so far failed in convincing the UAE to buy its Rafale fighters and in 2009 lost out to a South Korean consortium on a $20.4 billion deal to build nuclear power plants in the Gulf state.

Qatar's emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani also congratulated Hollande in a brief message carried by news agency QNA.Gas-rich Qatar is a traditional French ally and provided vital Arab support to French and British-led efforts to get a UN mandate for military action to protect civilians during the 2011 uprising in Libya.

Qatar also gave military support to NATO-led air operations in Libya by deploying troops on the ground. The small Gulf peninsula state has also raised its stake in French energy giant Total and will launch a fund for entrepreneurs from France's deprived suburbs.

Bahrain's King Hamad too sent a telegram to Hollande wishing him "success" and hailing the "deep and strong ties between the two countries."

According to Nabeel Rajab's lawyer, Mohammad Aljishi, the Bahraini authorities have said they will keep him detained for seven days.

Yousif Mahafda confirmed to Al Jazeera that the arrest order was linked to the interview Nabeel Rajab gave to a BBC news show a few weeks ago.

The trial of a prominent Bahraini activist is to begin on Sunday.

Nabeel Rajab, who heads the non-governmental Bahrain Centre for Human Rights (BCHR), was arrested at the airport late on Saturday over charges of "participating in illegal assembly and calling others to join," the centre said in a statement.

"Nabeel Rajab arrested by order of public prosecution. All legal procedures are being taken," the interior ministry said on its Twitter account.

Rajab was returning from Lebanon where he met the representative of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, according to activist Mohammed al-Maskati, who travelled with him.

He was led away by people in plainclothes, Maskati wrote on his Twitter page.

The BCHR said Rajab could face further charges, as he was summoned for interrogation on April 26 accused of "insulting the statutory bodies."

It quoted Rajab as saying earlier that he refused to attend his trial, accusing Bahrain's judiciary system of not being fair.

"Given that Bahrain in essence lacks a judiciary system that is independent and/or fair, and is far from being in line with international standards of a fair trial, I have decided to boycott the trial against myself," he said.

A prominent human rights activist has been arrested by Bahraini authorities, a statement said Saturday.

A statement from Bahrain's Interior Ministry said public prosecutors ordered the arrest of Nabeel Rajab, president of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights.

The group has been active in calling attention to alleged abuses by Bahraini security forces and crackdowns such as widespread arrests and workplace purges.

Rajab also was affiliated with international groups such as Human Rights Watch.

The statement gave no other immediate details. Rajab had been previously detained by Bahraini forces last year during the beginning of the uprising.

Four Bahraini policemen were wounded in a "terrorist" attack in a Shiite village, one of them critically, the kingdom's interior ministry said on Saturday.

"Four policemen injured including one critically in a terror blast in Bani Jamra" west of the capital Manama, the ministry said on Twitter, without elaborating.

"The explosion was from a home-made bomb," an official at the ministry's press centre said, adding that the device detonated as members of the security forces passed by.

They had arrived in Bani Jamra before dawn to disperse dozens of protesters, who were blocking roads in the village, the official said.

"An officer, who was seriously wounded in the arm and the abdomen, was hospitalised and has been operated on... and three policemen suffered burns,"he said, adding that an inquiry was under way to find those behind the attack.

The Bahraini authorities have denounced similar incidents in recent weeks, including on April 10, when seven policemen were wounded by a home-made bomb in Akr, south of Manama.
