Luka Koper, the Slovenian port operator, has signed an agreement with Konecranes for the delivery of three RTGs to its container terminal at Koper Port.

The sixteen-wheeled RTGs will be delivered to the Koper Container Terminal in October this year.

Ten Konecranes are already in operation at the Luka Koper facility.

“The reason behind all these investments is to improve operational efficiency at the Luka Koper Container Terminal which has, due to exceptional growth in cargo over the last year, become the largest such terminal in the Northern Adriatic,” the Slovenian firm commented.

In 2011, Koper’s Container Terminal handled and stored record amounts of container freight with throughput amounting to nearly 590,000 TEUs at the year’s end.

Last year, Luka Koper acquired eleven new yard trucks, two reach stackers, and two repeat orders of two RTGs.

Further to this, storage facilities at the Terminal were expanded last year, which has resulted in an overall capacity of 700,000 TEUs and the employment of an additional 23 workers.

The Port of Koper received a 20-year loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB) in April last year for both the expansion of its container terminal and in helping to ensure the stabilisation of the ports debts.
