Question: Will I be able to rise out of this severe depression, get my life in order, deal with a foreclosure and an impending death in my family and move forward rather than be mired in the depths of it all? ~Shelley
Anandra's Answer: Hello Shelley, I'm sorry to hear about all of the challenges in your life... and YES, you can/will move on. The fact that you're asking for help reveals a key factor: HOPE.
If you can resolve to learn your lessons fully from the "bad events," all of this difficulty can be compost for the fertile ground of your life. We all go through rough periods, and often they spur us onward to greater things if we take advantage of the opportunity disguised as a crisis. It's uncomfortable in the moment, but in retrospect, we look back with gratitude at those events that catalyzed change.
Your mind is incredibly creative. If you direct it towards hope, imagining your future rising from the rubble of the past, and coming out of this difficult period stronger, more connected to your Self, and more aware of potential pitfalls, then indeed that is what you will experience.
If you direct your mind towards self-pity, blaming others, helplessness, and embarrassment or shame, indeed you'll experience that.
The truth is that you're responsible for your experience. That's good news, because if you're responsible, you can change it. Events may come and go from your life, good and bad, but how you experience them is up to you.
If you want to turn this around and start juicing up the positivity in your life, I'd suggest taking concrete, positive action that supports your healthy future. It sounds like you've got a lot to turn around, so just thinking positive might not be enough. Start doing yoga, tai chi, or daily walk/swim/run in nature. Do a daily meditation practice (See my 5 tips article about why this is crucial!). Eat loads of fruit and vegetables from your local farmer's market. Put energy into doing what you love to do most (a hobby, craft, service project, etc.) If you can start nurturing one or all of these positive habits, you'll start a groundswell of change.
I'd strongly suggest investing in support for your transformation. Having help is invaluable when you're in a precarious place. Do you have a therapist already who you're working with for the depression you mentioned? Please find someone who can hold your hand through the rough spot at least until you get on your feet, headed towards your highest potential.
All the best,
Anandra
