Kids Biking Events in LA

On such a Summer Olympics year, the spirit of sports is alive and well, everywhere, including LA County.

In fact, an Olympic cyclist (and Long Beach Bike Ambassador), Tony Cruz, will be leading kids and families on the first Kidical Mass bike ride in Bixby Knolls on May 20th.

The event begins at Los Cerritos Park at 1 p.m. (and also ends there). It will span four miles, heading to Georgie's Place (3850 Atlantic Ave.) where participants can buy lunch and enjoy complimentary ice cream.

Highlights include music, free tune-ups and yoga demonstrations. Helmets are required. The ride ends at approximately 3 p.m. at Los Cerritos Park.

LA Chefs' Kitchen Nightmares

Friday May 4, 2012

Fire, hot liquids, knives...these are just some of the dangers chefs encounter in the kitchen. And LA Weekly has gone to the pains of uncovering the pains of some of LA's most successful chefs.

In a blog post that ran on Wednesday, famed LA culinaires like Jet Tila (Charleston) and Eric Greenspan (The Foundry) talk about their worst kitchen injuries.

The tales are all pretty grisly but the grossest, in my humble opinion, comes from David LeFevre of Manhattan Beach Post. His finger got caught in the blade compartment of a hand blender...yikes!

Go on LA Weekly's site to read about more LA chefs' kitchen nightmares.

Mah Jongg Exhibition at Skirball Center in LA

What connects America's Jews to Chinese American culture and communities? Such is the question posed by the folks at the Skirball Cultural Center; they're also prepared to answer it in the upcoming exhibit Project Mah Jongg.

The show--which runs from May 17th through September 2nd--explores the age-old game of Mah Jongg through vintage photographs, historical objects, Mah Jongg-inspired artwork, a visitor-activated audioscape, a game table and related instructional programs.

Plan to head over and find out what this simple yet culturally profound game of chance is all about.

Mexican Food For Cinco de Mayo in LA

There are just cinco days until Cinco de Mayo--the Mexican holiday extravaganza that takes place every May 5th.

Angelenos who find themselves in the mood for a fiesta will likely head to one of LA's great Mexican restaurants--where flautas, tacos, burritos and margaritas await.

One such Mexican eatery--Red O (on Melrose and Kilkea)--will be celebrating Cinco de Mayo with its 'Street Food Social Hour.' Between 3 and 6 p.m. items on chef Rick Bayless' California-Mexican menu will be on offer at special prices in the restaurant's tequila lounge an outdoor patio.

In addition, specialty margaritas and cocktails will be $8; wines: $7 and craft beers: $5.
