Five injured, 21 displaced in Plymouth fire started by cigarette; officer rescues residents
A four-alarm fire at a condominium building in Plymouth early Saturday morning displaced 21 residents and hospitalized five, one with a severe leg injury, fire officials said. A woman was hospitalized with the leg injury after jumping from her second-story deck. Four others, including a police officer who ran into the burning building and guided residents to safety, were treated for smoke inhalation. The fire started when a dropped cigarette burned through an oxygen tube.

Harvard releases 2010 pay for endowment chief, president
Harvard University’s endowment chief, Jane Mendillo, earned $3.5 million in 2010, down from $4.8 million in total compensation in 2009, according to Harvard, which released its latest tax filing Friday. The highest paid manager of the endowment in 2010 was Andy Wiltshire, who earned $5.5 million, Harvard said, for overseeing the outside firms that manage money for the nation’s largest endowment. Harvard’s top investment managers are highly compensated, routinely earning more than anyone else at the university if they beat their investment goals.

Mayor Menino criticizes focus on Elizabeth Warren’s heritage
On a day when Senator Scott Brown sought to fan further questions about Elizabeth Warren’s Native American heritage, Mayor Thomas M. Menino, who has not been shy about praising Brown, made clear he is fed up with the issue. “I think she has come clean but nobody has let her off the hook,” Menino said. “It’s not relevant at all in the campaign. Let’s talk about the real issues: education, housing, crime. Those are the real issues we should be talking about. This is one of the issues that you [use to] try to divert as a candidate because you can’t deal with the real issues.”

Former SpeechWorks chief executive out raising money for Xtone, startup that wants to speech-enable mobile apps
In the days before Siri, one of the most innovative speech startups around was Boston's SpeechWorks International. The company mainly focused on bringing speech recognition to the phone systems of customers like Amtrak, United Airlines, and FedEx, helping handle calls more efficiently. But the company was also working on "multi-modal" technologies for mobile devices way back in 2001, thinking about how we might speak commands as well as punch buttons on our phones. (This was before most phones had touchable screens, young readers.) SpeechWorks went public in an IPO that saw its shares triple on the first day of trading, and then was acquired in 2003 for $132 million by the Burlington company that grew into Nuance Communications. Now, the former CEO of SpeechWorks, Stuart Patterson, is out talking to local venture capital firms to raise money for another speech-related business....
