August 7, 2011

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states have expressed deep concern over the deteriorating conditions, increasing violence and the excessive use of force in Syria, which has resulted in the deaths and injuries of large numbers of civilians. A press release issued on Saturday by the GCC General Secretariat expressed regret and sorrow for the continued bloodshed, confirmed the importance of the security, stability and unity of Syria, and called for an immediate halt to violence in all its manifestations. The GCC advised Syria to demonstrate wisdom and to enact the serious, necessary reforms that will ensure the rights of the Syrian people, safeguard their dignity and meet their aspirations.

Since the release of the statement, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Bahrain have recalled their ambassadors from Damascus for consultations.
