October 17, 2011

Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal led the Saudi delegation to an emergency meeting of the Arab League Council held in Cairo yesterday. The meeting was called in response to the violence currently rocking Syria. The session was chaired by Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabor Al-Thani and was attended by Arab League Secretary General Dr. Nabil Al-Arabi and the Foreign Ministers from several Arab states.

Addressing the meeting, Sheikh Hamad said “The situation has been evolving in a serious manner as a result of the killings and violence in the absence of a glimpse of hope for a solution to the problem, making it incumbent upon us all as brethren to study how to contribute to a solution and to take all necessary procedures to stem the bloodshed and end the violence.”

For his part, Secretary General Al-Arabi stated, “The situation in Syria is very grave and requires an immediate halt to killing and violence.” He insisted that the Arab League has a responsibility to take a stance regarding the Syrian crisis, noting that his organization was working to launch a comprehensive dialogue between the conflicting parties.
