Women's Organisations Allied in Solidarity with Dr. Basma Abd el-Aziz

The following group of allied Egyptian women's organisations wishes to express its condemnation of the threats faced by the psychologist and patients' rights activist Dr. Basma Abd el-Aziz, as well as her referral to administrative investigation based on the statement that she issued on Monday 24th October. Dr. Abd el-Aziz, in her capacity as Director of Information of the General Secretariat for Mental Health, issued a statement opposing the referral of political activists and opinion makers to mental hospitals, on the pretext of assessing their mental health. This was in reference to the referral of activist Maikel Nabil, subjected to a military trial on the charge of insulting the military, to the mental hospital in Abbassiya.

Maspero: State Incitement of Sectarian Violence and Policy of Extrajudicial Killings

The undersigned organizations condemn the unprecedented extra-judicial killings and acts of violence committed by military police and central security forces, on the 9th of October in the Maspero area and central Cairo. Peaceful protesters demanding rights for Coptic citizens were attacked, leading to at least 25 deaths and 300 injuries, some critical.

The Mubarak Regime Persists

The undersigned rights organizations decisively condemn the exploitation of the political crisis between the forces of the revolution and those managing the country’s affairs in the transitional period as an excuse to employ the same repressive tools and means that the regime of deposed president Hosni Mubarak used against its enemies and critics, while foregoing dialogue, negotiations, and political solutions in favor of the old security approach.

EIPR Submits New Complaint against Ongoing Police Intimidation of those Injured in the Revolution

The Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR) filed a second complaint with the Public Prosecutor on 4 September (no. 18404/2011) asking for an investigation into the ongoing police intimidation of Mohamed Marzouk, who was shot by police officers on Friday, 28 January (known as the ‘Friday of Rage’). Policemen are pressuring Marzouk to withdraw his complaint against them.

The Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR) issued a briefing note on the World Hepatitis Day, 28 July 2011, presenting the most important features of the debate over the quality, safety and efficacy (QSE) of long-lasting interferon, produced by the Egyptian company Minapharm under the trade name 'Reiferon Retard', known by the media as 'Egyptian Interferon'.

In a Detailed Testimony from the Sidelines of the Events in Abbassiya: EIPR Lodges Complaint for Activist Gharbeia's Unlawful Detention

On Tuesday the 26th July, the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR) filed a complaint with the Public Prosecutor concerning the illegal detention of Amr Gharbeia, its Technology and Freedoms Progra Officer, at the hands of three people who claimed that he was a spy and member of the April 6th Movement. During his detention, which lasted about eight hours, Gharbeia underwent various forms of physical and verbal attacks.

National Initiative to Rebuild the Police Force... A Police for the People of Egypt

It is impossible to ignore the significance of the day on which Egypt's revolution started – the 25th January, the day on which the country used to celebrate National Police Day. It is also impossible to ignore the significance of the 28th January, when the dynamism of the revolution forced the defeated police force out of the conflict. That was a sign of the beginning of the end of the system, for its tyrannical hand had been cut off.

Police officers in the Marg Police Department are putting widespread pressure on citizens to drop their complaints, and then pursue citizens who complain about this pressure

Mohamed Marzouk, who is living away from home for fear of his pursuit by police officers, has been held in an undisclosed location so that he would drop his complaint and has suffered threats against his family

The EIPR demands the provision of real protection to him and to all families of the martyrs and the injured
