Jake Owen's Twitter Escapades

Monday May 7, 2012

Jake Owen had an eventful weekend. On Cinco de Mayo, the "Barefoot Blue Jean Night" singer was stopped by police in Vero Beach, Florida. He had apparently been dancing at a Steak 'n Shake while wearing an old man mask (?). After being released, Owen posted a picture of himself in handcuffs to Twitter, criticized the sheriffs' handling of the event, and then retracted his earlier tweets criticizing the police.

"I want to publicly apologize again for bringing to light a situation that I overreacted to," Owen wrote on Sunday. "I embarrassed myself and my family and most importantly the great people of my hometown." He went on: "The Sheriffs were doing their jobs and I made an immature decision to announce it to the world. This is me talking. [...] Not some puppet that is reciting what he 'should' say. I take full responsibility. Again, what's done is done, but I am truly sorry."

Such a fiasco might serve as the usual lesson about the dangers of social networking for celebrities (see Luke Bryan's "sushi incident"), but I actually find Owen's first-hand account refreshing.

The country singer has one of the most entertaining Twitter feeds in country music, and I hope this episode doesn't deter him from keeping the tweets coming.

Country Song of the Week: 'The Window Up Above'

Friday May 4, 2012

George Jones didn't write many of his biggest hits. "He Stopped Loving Her Today" and "Golden Ring," both chart-toppers for Jones, were the work of the inimitable Bobby Braddock. The country singer's first #1 song, "White Lightning," was written by The Big Bopper.

That's not the case for "The Window Up Above," which Jones wrote and topped out at #2 on the country singles charts in 1960.

The song is hardly uncharted territory for country audiences: A man learns of his wife's infidelity and bids his old life adieu.

But the song's heartfelt phrasing (Jones has rarely sung better), writhing fiddles, and sensuous pedal-steel take "The Window Up Above" miles above most cheating songs.

Rascal Flatts No. 1 with 'Banjo'

Thursday May 3, 2012

It had to happen sometime.

Sixteen weeks after its debut, Rascal Flatts's "Banjo" tunes up at #1 on the country singles charts.

How did new records from Kip Moore, Lee Brice, and the Josh Abbott Band fare against Lionel Richie's thus-far-unstoppable Tuskegee?

Find out with my take on this week's country album charts.

Country Song of the Week: 'A Woman Like You'

Friday April 27, 2012

Refreshingly tongue-in-cheek, but sincere by the time the chorus comes around, Lee Brice's "A Woman Like You" reached #1 earlier this month.

It's about saying the wrong thing, then saying the right thing. Then saying the wrong thing again.

Relationships, people.

It's one of Brice's best tunes, and you can find the humorous country song on the singer's just-released sophomore effort, Hard 2 Love.
