Strong and Weak Verbs

What's the difference between a strong verb and a weak verb in the German language? That is just another word for irregular and regular respectively. Unfortunately with strong verbs, one needs to memorize their conjugation, since they do not follow a predictable pattern. Weak verbs on the other hand, do follow a predictable pattern.
