Stepping up to the podium at the Friday evening reception at John Carroll Weekend in Chicago, Illinois Gov. Patrick Quinn (F’71) posed a question about the annual event that recognizes alumni achievement: What better place to celebrate than Illinois?
Illinois boasts more Hoya political leaders than just Quinn. They include Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon (L’97), Attorney General Lisa Madigan (C’88) and Sen. Dick Durbin (F’66, L’69), all of whom offered remarks during the weekend. Chicago itself is home to Georgetown’s sixth-largest alumni population.
The more than 1,200 alumni and friends who attended John Carroll Weekend took part in nearly 50 events, including faculty- and alumni-led discussions on politics, today’s global economy, ethics, the future of American leadership in the world, entrepreneurship, educational innovation and Ignatian spirituality. Attendees went behind the scenes at Chicago landmarks like Soldier Field, the Lyric Opera House and Wrigley Field and heard unique perspectives on Chicago’s art treasures—both famous and up-and-coming—from Georgetown faculty. Evenings meant social events at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Field Museum, plus improv at Second City, which has launched the careers of some of America’s most famous comics. Watch a recap of the weekend’s highlights above.
At the core of the weekend was the John Carroll Awards banquet, now in its 60th year, at which a cadre of distinguished alumni was recognized for their outstanding service to society and the university. Watch a video
