HM King Mohammed VI

His Majesty King Mohammed VI was born on Wednesday August 21, 1963 in Rabat. At the age of four, HM the late King Hassan II enrolled him at the Quranic School of the Royal Palace. On June 28th, 1973, HM King Mohammed VI successfully completed the certificate of primary studies, and pursued his secondary studies at the Royal College where he received the Baccalaureate in 1981.

In 1985, HM King Mohammed VI obtained Bachelor’s degree in law from the Faculty of Legal, Economic and Social Sciences in Rabat. The subject of his thesis was “The Arab-African Union and the Kingdom’s Strategy in International Relations”.

In 1987, he got the First Certificate of higher studies in political sciences with distinction.

In July 1988, HM the King obtained a Ph.D in Public Law with distinction.

In order to complete his training and to practice the principles and rules of law learnt at the university, HM spent an internship of several months, starting November 1988, in Brussels under the supervision of Mr. Jacques Delors, then President of the Commission of the European Communities. 

On October 29th, 1993, the University of Nice-Sophia Antipolis in France granted His Majesty the title of a Doctor in Law with distinction, for his Ph.D thesis on: “Cooperation between the European Economic Community and the Arab Maghreb Union”.

On December 22nd, 1979, HM King Mohammed VI was appointed as Honorary Chairman of the Association Socio-Culturelle du Bassin Méditerranéen “Socio-Cultural Association of the Mediterranean.”

On March 18th, 1982, the Sovereign was appointed by HM the late King Hassan II Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the 9th Mediterranean Games in Casablanca.

On April 11th, 1985, HM King Mohammed VI was appointed by HM the late King Hassan II in the position of Coordinator of the Bureaus and Departments of the General Staff of the Royal Armed Forces, a task worthy of a prince who has successfully carried out the various responsibilities and tasks entrusted to him.

On July 12th, 1994, HM King Mohammed VI was promoted to the rank of major general.

Since 1996, HM is President of the Association Royale Marocaine du Cheval de Selle (ARMCS) and honorary president of the association "TAFILELT”. The sovereign is also president of the Oudayas Surf Club of Rabat (OSCR), since 1999.

Trained to carry out tough tasks since his young age, HM King Mohammed VI, then Crown Prince, was often instructed by his late father to fulfill several missions at the national, Arab, Islamic, African and international levels, to heads of brotherly and friendly countries. He took part in several international and regional conferences.

His first official trip overseas dates back to April 6, 1974, when he represented the late King Hassan II at the religious service at the “Notre Dame de Paris” Cathedral in tribute to French President Georges Pompidou.

He became the King of Morocco on July 23rd, 1999 after the death of King Hassan II. The allegiance ceremony took place in the Throne Room at the Royal Palace in Rabat.

On July 30th, 1999, King Mohammed VI ordered that the Throne Day be celebrated on July 30th of every year, and addressed the nation in his first throne speech in which the monarch committed to pursuing the work of his father, HM the late King Hassan II, and to giving priority to a number of social problems.

HM King Mohammed VI is the Commander-in-chief of the Royal Armed Forces.

In his first trip overseas since his enthronement, HM the king visited, on December 25th-28th, 1999, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and the Republic of Tunisia.

On July 12th, 2002, HM the King married her Royal Highness Lalla Salma.

On May 8th, 2003, Crown Prince Moulay Al Hassan was born in Rabat. He was named after his grandfather, HM the late King Hassan II.

The King was awarded several decorations and prizes:

- The Trophy of the International Association for Sport without Violence (AICVS), September 11th, 1983.


- The Grand Cordon of the Republic of Tunisia, August 1987.


- The Gold Medals awarded by the Omnisport Magazine (French-English) "Champion d'Afrique" for the years 1988 and 1989.


- The "For Granada 1999" Honorary Prize, awarded by the group of the SER radio-station network, December 1999.


- Order of Hussein Ibn Ali (Jordan), March 2000.


- The Grand Cross with the Merit Order Cordon of the Italian Republic, April 2000.


- The Grand Cordon of National Merit (Mauritania), April 2000.


- The Grand Chain of the November 7th Order (Tunisia), May 2000.


- The Grand Cordon of the Malian national Insignia, June 2000.


- Prize of the US Hellen Keller Foundation, active in the social field and especially in struggle against blindness, July 17th, 2000.


- Title of doctor honoris causa of the George Washington University, June 22nd, 2000.


- The Sash of Isabelle the Catholic Order (Spain), September 18th, 2000.


- Abderrahmane I Prize, awarded by the City Hall of Almunecar (southern Spain). The Prize is traditionally awarded to personalities having significantly contributed to the consolidation of relations between the Arab World and Europe, November 7th, 2000.


- The ISESCO emblem, the highest distinction awarded by the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization to heads of member States, December 7th, 2000.


- The Oumaya Al-Watani Wissam of the Grand Wichail Order (Syria), April 9th, 2001.


- The Lebanese Merit Wissam of Exceptional category, June 13th, 2001.


- The Abou Bakr Grand Cordon, the highest distinction of the organization of Arab Red Cross and Red Crescent societies, awarded to HM the King in recognition of HM’s role in humanitarian actions and his solidarity with the underprivileged segments, June 29th, 2001.


- The Grand Order of Al Khalifa, Bahrain, July 28th, 2001.


- The President Ecu by the Arab Labor Organization for the Monarch’s     efforts in economic development and promoting joint Arab action, April 19th, 2002.


- The Golden Order of merit of African Handball, awarded by the African Handball Federation (CAHB), April 22nd, 2002.


- The Emblem of the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO), April 29th, 2002.


- The Wissam of Mubarak Al-Kabir awarded by the Kuwaiti head of State, Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, October 22nd, 2002.


- The Independence Cordon awarded by the Emir of Qatar, Hamad Bin Khalifa Al- Thani, October 25th, 2002.


- The “Nile Grand Cordon” awarded by Egyptian President Mohamed Hosni Mubarak, October 28th, 2002.


- The Medallion of Honor by the Lions Club International, awarded to HM the King in recognition of HM’s efforts in social service, May 7th, 2003.


- The Medallion of Honor awarded by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), October 22nd, 2003.


- The Grand Cross of the National Order of “Valeur du Cameroun”, June 17th, 2004.


- The Grand Cross of the Equatorial star, the highest distinction in Gabon, June 21st, 2004.


- The Grand Cross of the National Order of Niger, June 24th, 2004.


- The Achievement Award by Arabian Business magazine, edited by ITP Business, the first publisher of economic magazines in the Middle East. The award was given to HM King Mohammed VI in recognition of HM’s efforts and initiatives in political and economic reforms, July 28th, 2004. - The Grand Cross of the Wissam Léopold by King Albert II of Belgium, October 5th, 2004.


- The “Ecusson” prize awarded by the World Federation of Travel Journalists and Writers and the Arab Federation of Travel Journalists and Writers, November 24th, 2004.


- The Olivier Grand Prix for Tourism and Peace awarded by the Mediterranean Organisation of Travel Journalists and Writers, November 23rd, 2004.


- During HM’s official visit to Brazil, HM the King was awarded the “Cruzeiro do Sul” Medallion by Brazilian President Lula da Silva. It is the highest distinction awarded in Brazil to heads of State and prominent personalities, November 26th, 2004.


- The Medallion of Honor of the Grand Cross Order awarded by Speaker of the Peruvian Parliament during HM’s official visit to  Peru, December 1st, 2004.


- The Order of “Bernardo O'higgin” awarded by Chilean President Ricardo Lagos Escobar. This most prestigious distinction is awarded to heads of State and prominent foreign personalities, December 3rd, 2004.


- The Grand Mexican Order of the Azteca Eagle awarded by the President of Mexico, Vicente Fox Quesada. It is one of the most prestigious decorations awarded to heads of State and outstanding figures, February 11th, 2005.


- The Grand Cross of the Burkina-Faso Order, awarded by President Blaise Compaoré, one the highest distinctions awarded in Burkina-Faso to a head of State, March 1st, 2005.


- HM King Mohammed VI is elected “Man of the Francophone economic year” by the Francophone Business Forum, for the wide-ranging social reforms the monarch initiated in the kingdom, March 19th, 2005.


- The  Collar of the "Chrysanthemum" Supreme Order and the "Chrysanthemum" Supreme Grand Order awarded by the Emperor of Japan, Akihito, November 28th, 2005.


- Insignia of Grand Commander of the National Order of the Republic of The Gambia, awarded by President Yahia Jammeh, February 20th, 2006.


- The Grand Cross of the National Order of Merit of Congo by President Denis Sassou Nguesso, February 22nd, 2006.


- The Grand Order of National Merit of National Heroes, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Joseph Kabila. It is the highest honorary distinction in Congo, February 28th, 2006.

-    April 21, 2006, HM the King receives the first rank shield of the Special Olympics International in recognition of His Majesty’s efforts benefiting the disabled.

-     May 3, 2006, the ISESCO awards its highest distinction to HM the King in tribute of the efforts led by the Sovereign to promote dialogue of civilizations and coexistence between the peoples of the globe.

-    December 13, 2006, the Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah decorates HM King Mohammed VI with the honor of AL Moubarak Al Kabir.

-    May 15, 2007, Latvian President, Mme Vaira Vike-Freiberga, decorates HM the King with the Three Stars honor, the highest distinction in Latvia.

- May 18, 2007, Saudi Arabia’s Sovereign decorates HM the King with the King Abdelaziz honor.

- April 12, 2009, The Washington-based Arab Community Center (ACC) awards the world peace prize 2009 to King Mohammed VI for His Majesty’s initiatives to consolidate peace in the world, his chairmanship of Al-Quds Committee, and his efforts to preserve sacred values and promote peace, freedom and democracy in the Maghreb region.

- April 17, 2009, Equatorial Guinea's President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo decorates HM the King with the Grand Collier of the Order of Independence, the highest decoration granted by the country.

- October 28, 2009, the Union Arab Women Investors offers its crown to HM the King.

- November 19, 2009, Amadeus institute awards the Medays 2009 environment and sustainable development Prize to HM King Mohammed VI in recognition of His Majesty’s personal commitment to responsible development.
