George F. Baker Scholars Program
Baker means business.
The Baker Scholars Program was founded in 1973 at Georgetown College by the family of the late George F. Baker, a leading financier and philanthropist, who believed in cultivating business leaders who are intellectually inspired and socially conscious. The Baker Program offers a unique opportunity for Georgetown College students to learn about the world of business. The selection process is highly competitive, as prospective Scholars are interviewed by the Board of Trustees and the College Dean's academic administrator to determine their admission. The Scholars are liberal arts majors with strong academic records, leadership skills, a demonstrated commitment to service and who have an interest in pursuing a career in business.
As a group, the Baker Scholars develop and lead initiatives to visit top business leaders from diverse industries across the country. The Bakers organize in-depth conversations with these leaders, as well as take advantage of the resources in the D.C. area. Bakers frame these conversations through the Jesuit ideal of men and women for others; community service is a fundamental element to the program. The Baker Scholars Program looks to nurture enterprising leaders for others.
Bakers also give back through mentorship. Students in the group form close relationships, learning from and guiding each other even beyond Georgetown. The Trustees of the program are all Georgetown College alumni, and most are former Baker Scholars. They mentor the current Scholars, and help them explore how their liberal arts interests intersect with the business world. Every Baker is expected to give back by making a meaningful contribution to the program, to Georgetown, and to the world. To become a Baker is to be a Baker for life.
