A Timeline of UAE Cricket

1940s Cricket is first played in the UAE by British troops stationed there during the second world war.
1960s First clubs established
1976 First match for the national side against Pakistan International Airlines at Sharjah is abandoned due to rain.
1980 Cricket associations set up in Dubai and Sharjah.
1981 The current Sharjah stadium is opened.
1984 First ODIs in the UAE as Sharjah hosts the Asia Cup, though the UAE don't take part.
1989 The UAE gain affiliate membership of the ICC.
1990 The UAE gain associate membership of the ICC.
Netherlands tour the UAE, winning both matches against the national side.
1994 The UAE win the ICC Trophy at their first attempt.
The UAE play their first ODIs against India and Pakistan as they host the Austral-Asia Cup.
The UAE finish last in a tri-series against Kenya and the Netherlands.
1995 The UAE play in a tournament against the A sides of the Asian Test playing nations, finishing last.
1996 The UAE play in Pakistan's domestic one-day competition, winning one of their four games.
The UAE play in their first World Cup, where they lose all their games except against the Netherlands in the first ever ODI between two associates.
The UAE are runners up to Bangladesh in the first ACC Trophy in Malaysia.
1997 Tighter eligibility rules see a much weaker the UAE side finish 10th in the ICC Trophy in Malaysia.
1998 The UAE again finish as runners up to Bangladesh in the ACC Trophy.
2000 The UAE host and win the ACC Trophy, beating Hong Kong in the final and qualifying for the next Asia Cup.
2001 The UAE finish 5th in the ICC Trophy in Canada.
The UAE beat Australia twice at the Hong Kong Sixes.
2002 The UAE beat Nepal in the final of the ACC Trophy in Singapore.
2004 The UAE host the ICC 6 Nations Challenge and finish 5th, level on points with four other teams.
The UAE play the first Intercontinental Cup match against Nepal. Ali Asad takes nine wickets in the first innings. They beat Malaysia later in the tournament, but are eliminated by Canada in the semi-finals.
The UAE win the ACC Trophy in Malaysia, beating Oman in the final.
The UAE take part in their first Asia Cup, losing to India and Sri Lanka in the first round.
The UAE beat India and South Africa in the Hong Kong Sixes on their way to fourth place.
2005 The UAE beat Hong Kong in the final of the first ACC Fast Track Nations tournament.
The UAE lose all four matches against England A in Sharjah.
The UAE reach the semi-finals of the Intercontinental Cup, despite a first round loss to Nepal.
2005/06 The UAE win the ACC Fast-Track Nations tournament.
2006 The ACC Trophy is held in Malaysia for the second time, the UAE again beating Hong Kong in the final.
The UAE lose by an innings to Namibia in the Intercontinental Cup.
2007 Final matches in the 2006/07 Intercontinental Cup see the UAE draw against Scotland and lose to Ireland by an innings, during which Eoin Morgan scores an Irish record 209 not out.
The UAE's first matches in the 2007/08 Intercontinental Cup see them draw against Scotland, lose to Canada and beat Bermuda.
The UAE women's side play their first matches, though they lose all three in the ACC Women's tournament.
The UAE finish fourth in the first ACC Twenty20 Cup in Kuwait.
The UAE win Division 2 of the World Cricket League in Namibia.
2008 The UAE play ODI cricket again, losing to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup.
The UAE are runners-up to Hong Kong in the ACC Trophy Elite tournament, the first time they hadn't won since 1998. They also suffered a shock defeat to Saudi Arabia in the first match of the tournament.
2009 Dubai hosts its first ODIs, with two ODIs between Australia and Pakistan. Three further ODIs are played at Abu Dhabi before the teams return to Dubai for a Twenty20 International.
The UAE hosts the ACC Twenty20 Cup, finishing as runners-up to Afghanistan.
The UAE finish seventh at the ICC World Cup Qualifier in South Africa.
The UAE's women finish seventh at the ACC Women's Twenty20 Cup.
The UAE tour Namibia. They win the Intercontinental Cup match and both one-day matches.
2010 The first ODIs at Sharjah since 2003 see Afghanistan play Canada in a two match series, which is drawn 1-1. The second ODI sees Sharjah become the first venue to host 200 ODIs. The teams also play an Intercontinental Cup match, with Afghanistan winning by 6 wickets.
The UAE hosts the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier, finishing third. The tournament is won by Afghanistan.
The MCC tour the UAE.
Uganda tour the UAE. The Intercontinental Shield match is drawn, the UAE win the one-day match and both Twenty20 matches.
The MCC play Durham at Abu Dhabi in a four-day day/night first-class match as part of the MCC's trials of pink balls.
The UAE finish sixth in the ACC Trophy in Kuwait, the first time they fail to make the semi-finals.
The UAE tour Bermuda. They win the Intercontinental Shield match, both one-day matches and both Twenty20 matches.
The UAE tour Kenya, losing all four one-day matches against the national side.
Namibia beat the UAE in the Intercontinental Shield final at Dubai.
2011 The UAE host and win Division Two of the World Cricket League, beating Namibia in the final.
The MCC play Nottinghamshire at Abu Dhabi in the second annual day/night four-day match.
The UAE's women finish ninth at the ACC Women's Twenty20 Cup in Kuwait.
The UAE tour Kenya. They win the Intercontinental Cup match and the two match one-day series is drawn.
Afghanistan tour the UAE. The Intercontinental Cup match is drawn and the UAE win both one-day matches.
