The Kamal Adham Center for Television and Digital Journalism

The Kamal Adham Center for Television and Digital Journalism is home to the oldest and most respected graduate journalism program in the Arab world.  It was founded in 1985 by Professor Emeritus Abdallah Schleifer with the generous support of AUC board member Sheikh Kamal Adham.  The Center has since graduated some of Egypt’s most distinguished television figures, and alumni can be found in all the region’s major satellite channels and stations, including Al Jazeera, Al Arabiya, Future TV, AlHurra, ONTV, as well as BBC Arabic, and in many of the region’s leading newspapers.

The Adham Center is dedicated to promoting quality journalism and professionalism in the next generation of Arab journalists. The Master’s in Television and Digital Journalism is unique for its focus on all aspects of reporting and production in a digital era, training students in core reporting, interviewing, new media and studio production skills.  Students not only gain hands-on experience, but also examine the role, rights and responsibilities of journalists in a changing media environment.

In addition, the Center’s widely recognized professional training program offers courses in voice coaching, scriptwriting, video-editing and documentary film making.  AUC undergraduates may also take courses in broadcast journalism through the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication. The Center partners with a range of international agencies and foundations to administer civic society, public service and media training projects

The Center’s state-of-the-art facilities include a broadcast-quality television studio attached to the only fully automated, teaching newsroom in the region. Unlike many university newsrooms, it operates on the Associated Press’s ENPS, thus duplicating the work flow of a professional television newsroom.  Other facilities include two editing labs, with both linear and non-linear editing equipment, and the latest in digital field cameras.

Adham Center students and staff operate AUC TV, an in-house television channel featuring student programming and live coverage of on-campus events.  The Center also publishes the online journal Arab Media & Society (www.arabmediasociety.com), a forum for academics and journalists to publish research and commentary on Arab media.
