A Message from Dean Chester Gillis

The Eagles said it well in their song Waiting in the Weeds: “It’s comin’ on the end of August. Another summer’s promise almost gone.” All of our summer plans, so promising in May, are now either checked off or unfulfilled. Now we begin a new academic year with renewed promise and expectation.

On October 4, we dedicate our new science center, Regents Hall. The departments of biology, chemistry, and physics moved into the building this summer and have welcomed students into this 155,00-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility designed by Payette Architects of Boston. Regents Hall also serves as a study and gathering space for all students, with wide corridors and student lounges located throughout the building. It conveniently connects to the Leavey Center and has outdoor patio space that connects it with the Hariri Building, home of the McDonough School of Business.

The minor in journalism commences this fall with a full cohort. Biological physics is a new major in the physics department, and philosophy is planning a philosophy and bioethics minor.

This fall we welcome new faculty in the College who earned their doctorates at some of the nation’s and the world's most prestigious institutions including Brown University (performing arts), Columbia University (English), Duke University (English), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (economics), New York University (linguistics), Penn State (biology), Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa, Italy (classics), University of California, Davis (philosophy), University of Hawai‘i (linguistics), University of Michigan (linguistics), University of Minnesota (English), University of Pennsylvania (computer science), University of Texas at Austin (art and art history), and University of Toronto (philosophy).

Welcome to the start of another fantastic year at Georgetown College.

Hoya Saxa,

Chester Gillis
