Opinion: Only Way for Libya Now is Forward – by Muftah Al-Mabrouk
25/08/2012 11:23:00
I have often wondered why some people fail to resign themselves to reason and try to make the best of what's there. In Libya, some loyalists of the former dictator Muammar Gaddafi seem to believe that the February 17 Revolution was just a passing phase. They were so lost in the corruption that prevailed, that they believe that their good old days would return. No way!

Libya has now embarked on its future and despite the obstacles Gaddafi loyalists, from inside and outside of Libya try to make, the country will never go back to those dark ages when the only people that mattered were the regime's inner circle. That is why these same to keep on trying to clutch at straws, that however, are much too feeble to sustain their beliefs.

The king is dead...long live the king is a saying that people of democratic countries always try to follow. That is why elections are held, and that is why the people who vote in a government also have the power to dismantle it, in a democratic way, at the polls. That is why the people's vote is so important.

Libyans who voted in the first free election in Libya on July 7 appear to have understood what a great weapon they have in their hands. They can use it to elect a government and also to change it if it fails to deliver.

I would never concede that all of Libya now is against all that Gaddafi stood for. But for the sake of democracy and the future of the country the majority of them recognise that there are now different rulers whose main task is to push Libya forward towards progress.

Recent car bombings and attacks on government buildings in Tripoli and the rebel stronghold of Benghazi are being attributed at Gaddafi loyalists whose aim could also be to elicit an overreaction that would deepen divides between Libya’s new leadership and the communities in Libya favoured by the Gaddafi regime.

To live in the past is very wrong. Failing to recognise that there's a new future under new leaders will only ruin one's presence of mind and living in frustration is not only hazardous to one's health but also leads to ruin.

So my advice to the old regime's loyalists who keep on trying to put spokes in the wheel of the new government, particularly those engaged in violence is, to halt their ways and to join the new movement that could lead the country into prosperity.

They only way now is forward, and those who are still unable to understand that we Libyans are now breathing fresh air, certainly fresher than we ever breathed under the old regime, should stop and think. They would do well to put their intelligence, their skills, their endeavours and their patriotism to better use. but refused to lay down their arms when the war ended.

Libya needs everybody. It needs its own people who most certainly have a lot to offer, and to an extent it also needs the foreigners, be they workers, entrepreneurs or states, therefore those who were willing to work together with us to oust Gaddafi, should now also work with us as we try to embark on a new, peaceful path.

Comment:
The article was okay till the last paragraph which indeed destroyed the integrity of the writer's effort, and revealed his intellectual lacking.
Comment:
I can only agree with you. Libya has to take care of its new democratic era. And don't look back, look forward for your country's best. I have been a member of the LYM-group at the web. Have been supporting the FF-fighters from day one. And nobody wants that back....

Opinion: Libya: Advice to Gaddafi Loyalists - by S.R.H. Hasmi
It is time for Gaddafi loyalists to give up because they are in no position to reverse the progress that has been made in the meantime and their struggle is not for a just cause anyway. By persisting in their terrorist acts, Gaddafi loyalists are only doing great harm to themselves as well as to their near and dear ones.

Opinion: The Children Are Still Dying: Violence is Not News - by Ramzy Baroud
Somewhere in my home I have a set of photo albums I rarely go near. I fear the flood of cruel memories that might be evoked from looking at the countless photos I took during a trip to Iraq. Many of the pictures are of children who developed rare forms of cancer as a result of exposure to Depleted Uranium (DU), which was used in the US-led war against Iraq over two decades ago.
