26/11/2010 16:39:00
The 42nd Annual General Assembly of the African Airlines Association (AFRAA) has appointed Dr Elijah Chingosho as Secretary General of the continental air transport organization effective 01st January 2011. Dr. Chingosho will take over from Mr. Tewodros Tamrat who has been Ag. Secretary General since June 2010.

The new Secretary General is expected to steer the affairs of AFRAA and reposition the organization as a premier continental air transport body of repute; delivering quality service to members and effectively representing their interests.

Dr Elijah Chingosho has extensive and diverse professional expertise in aviation, ranging from executive business management to being an author of aviation and business books.

He has been the Director of Safety, Technical and Training of AFRAA for the past 9 years. His familiarity with the functioning of AFRAA and its diverse membership interest will be extremely valuable in formulating strategies to reposition the organization and achieve its goals.

With over 24 years aviation experience in technical and general management, 17 of which has been at senior management level, Dr Chingosho is well-equipped with the knowledge, skills and expertise to deliver on his new mandate beginning 2011.

The newly appointed Secretary General of AFRAA started his aviation career in the Air Force of Zimbabwe where he rose to the position of Director of Engineering with rank of Group Captain before leaving to pursue other interests. He had a stint with a private marketing company in Harare before joining Air Zimbabwe as the General Manager, Engineering and Ag. General Manager Human Resources. He subsequently joined AFRAA in November 2001.

Dr Chingosho holds three Masters Degrees in Aeronautical Engineering, Business Administration and Transport Economics and a Doctorate in Business Administration.

In addition, he holds several professional qualifications including being a Chartered Engineer with the United Kingdom Engineering Council, a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries and Administrators 2 and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport. He holds three IATA Diplomas in Safety Management Systems for Airlines, Airline Operations and Cost Management Systems for Airlines and very recently he obtained a DELF B2 Diploma in the French language.

Dr Chingosho has authored four books on aviation subjects and general and strategic management; Elementary Aircraft Propulsion (1989), African Airlines in the Era of Liberalisation (2005) (an E-Book), Strategic Management - Text and Cases (2008) and General Management (2008).

Judging from the valuable services he has delivered to African airlines in the area of safety, security, technical cooperation, management and human capital development, Dr Chingosho is upbeat of moving AFRAA to the next level and providing value-added services to its members and stakeholders.
