How do you know if DSpace is the right choice for you? How do you get started in your evaluation process? Follow the steps below to explore DSpace in more detail.

Step 1 - Watch a DSpace overview

Watch the DSpace introductory video. This video walks you through a 5 minute demonstration of how DSpace works.

Step 2 - Try DSpace for yourself

Play with a demo version of DSpace and see how it works before you download and install the entire platform.  You may access the DSpace demo instance to explore the features and functionality of DSpace. You may also access a DSpace download from JumpBox that will give you a private online instance. The trial will last for an hour. View this "Ramp Up" video, a 5 minute tutorial that will help you make your first article submission.

Alternatively, you may work through the The DSpace Course with the DSpace Live CD, created by JISC's Repositories Support Project (RSP).

Step 3 - Learn about how to set up a repository

Review the Digital Repositories infoKit created by JISC/RSP, it is a practical 'how to' guide to setting up and running digital repositories. This resource has been written for repository administrators. It assumes no prior knowledge of repository matters and, more importantly, assumes no prior technical knowledge.

Alternatively you can review the LEADIRS Workbook: Creating an Institutional Repository. The workbook outlines the major steps and decisions an organization must take in designing and building an institutional repository. Written originally for a series of workshops in the UK, the workbook contains advice, sample documents, tools, and reference materials.

Step 4 - Learn about common DSpace customizations

Review the DSpace How-To Guide: Tips and tricks for managing common DSpace chores. This guide introduces the most common customization related tasks for newcomers to DSpace administration.

Step 5 - Refer to the DSpace documentation

For comprehensive technical guidance on the DSpace software, refer to the current DSpace Manual.

Step 6 - Still have questions?

Join the DSpace community's mailing lists and ask your questions of other DSpace users and developers. It is also a great way to learn more about the community, the software, and hear of upcoming events. If you'd rather talk with someone in your own country or region, contact one of the DSpace Ambassadors. Ambassadors help new or potential users with general questions about DSpace as well as providing guidance on additional resources available in the larger DSpace community.
