The number of Syrian refugees rose sharply last month, with more than 100,000 fleeing the war-torn country to seek refuge in neighbouring countries, the UN refugee agency said Tuesday.

It was the highest monthly figure since the beginning of the Syrian conflict in March last year, a UNHCR spokeswoman said.

"This is a significant escalation in refugee movement," the spokeswoman said, adding that the total number of Syrians to have fled since the conflict erupted was 235,000.

"This probably points to a very precarious... situation in the country," she said, adding: "We're responding as best we can."
