CHENNAI: Jawaharlal Nehru Salai (100-Feet Road) seems to be the city's accident hotspot. In 2010, 40 people died in accidents on the stretch and 250 were injured. In 2011, 15 people have died. Data available with the traffic police shows that one person dies every nine days on this road and one person is injured every day. Jawaharlal Nehru road is followed by Anna Salai, with one person being injured every 1.13 days. Together, these roads account for almost 14% of the 5,101 accidents that occurred in Chennai in 2010.
Jawaharlal Nehru road has claimed over 200 lives since 2006. In 2010, there were 337 accidents, of which 135 involved two-wheelers. Traffic police said the busy Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus junction is the most accident prone. They said the high density of buses going to CMBT and loaded trucks headed to Koyambedu market are the reason for the high accident rate. The number of accidents peaked at 450 in 2008 with 44 deaths. Traffic police attribute the increasing deaths to the rise in the number of vehicles, which is disproportionate to road space.
