Georgetown University Locations

Georgetown’s Main Campus is located in the historic Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C. Georgetown College, the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, the Edward A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, and the McDonough School of Business are all situated on campus grounds.

In 1789, John Carroll, the founder of the university, secured the deed to 60 acres of land on a hilltop overlooking the village of Georgetown, which at the time was still part of the state of Maryland. Carroll was appointed Archbishop of Baltimore in 1808.

Built in the federal style in 1795, Old North was the Main Campus building until the construction of Healy Hall in the late 1800s. The building is named after Patrick F. Healy, S.J., Georgetown president from 1873 to 1882 and the first African-American to head a major, predominantly white university. Work began on Healy Hall in 1877 and much of the interior was completed by the 1881-1882 academic year. Healy Gates, located at 37th and O Streets NW, is the primary entrance to the Main Campus.

Seated at the epicenter of political activity in Washington, D.C., Georgetown’s Law Center neighbors Congress, the Supreme Court and a wide variety of federal agencies and administrative boards of Capitol Hill.

The Law Center began in 1870 as the first law school in the United States founded by a Jesuit institution of higher learning. The Law Center campus comprises the Bernard P. McDonough Hall, the Edward Bennett Williams Law Library, the Eric E. Hotung International Law Building, the Bernard S. and Sarah M. Gewirz Student Center. Its most recent building is its new Sport & Fitness Center.

The Georgetown University Medical Center is adjacent to the Main Campus and home to the School of Medicine, the School of Nursing & Health Studies, the Lombardi Comprehensive Care Center, the Biomedical Graduate Research Organization and Georgetown University Hospital, which is owned by MedStar. The main entrance to Medical Center is located off of Reservoir Road N.W.

The School of Continuing Studies (SCS) is relocating to the heart of downtown Washington, D.C., as part of an expansion of the university’s “Georgetown Downtown” presence.

The new Georgetown Downtown campus is part of the university’s plans to expand beyond its campus on 37th and O Streets as it further engages with Washington, D.C., and offers educational opportunities and services beyond the main campus.

The new SCS location – at 650 Massachusetts Ave., N.W. at the intersection of 7th St. – is near the vibrant and accessible Gallery Place/Chinatown neighborhood, offering a state-of-the-art learning environment for the school’s diverse community of students and professionals.

Students enrolled in the school’s educational programs will connect with the local community through learning and service in a location that features companies and organizations from their fields and industries of study.

The campus is located eight city blocks from Georgetown Law Center and just three blocks from the Verizon Center, home of Georgetown men’s basketball.

The new SCS building is scheduled to open in late 2013.

Georgetown extended the School of Foreign Service to the Arabian Peninsula in Qatar in 2005. The sprawling 2,500-acre location known as Education City houses Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service in Qatar (SFS-Q) and five other American universities.
SFS-Q takes education to a global arena that allows students and faculty to study, conduct research and be a part of an educational enterprise that helps educate future leaders in international affairs.

In the 2008-2009 academic year, Georgetown’s Law Center opened the Center for Transnational Legal Studies in London, England. This program fosters a multicultural and transnational setting by bringing together faculty and students from a variety of world premier law schools to study transnational legal studies.

Many of the program’s participating law schools send faculty to teach at the center, where they advise students from a diverse set of legal and national backgrounds. The center promotes a globalized understanding of transnational law for lawyers that will be confronting legal problems and opportunities that will take them beyond the borders of their home countries.

A donation from former Turkish ambassador George Crewes McGhee, this villa has helped Georgetown expand its academic offerings into the Mediterranean. The McGhee Center serves as Georgetown’s Turkey-based hub for Eastern Mediterranean Studies and also accommodates Georgetown students participating in study-abroad programs in Alanya, Turkey.

The academic programs offered at the McGhee Center examine the civilization, history and culture in the Eastern Mediterranean, as well as the political forces that affect the region today.

Ambassador McGhee left the villa to Georgetown in hopes of it becoming a center of scholarship and learning about the Eastern Mediterranean, Anatolia and modern Turkey. Georgetown continues to keep this dream a reality, offering opportunities for overseas study, teaching and research in addition to sharing the space for workshops, meetings, tours and alumni events in Turkey.

The Villa Le Balze offers students the opportunity to study in Italy as part of the study-abroad program or for a short-term tour, both of which encompass the fulfillment of travels combined with the pleasures of learning. Marquesa Rockefeller, the daughter of Elizabeth Rockefeller and granddaughter of John D. Rockefeller, donated her father’s estate to Georgetown to be used as a facility for international learning.

The Villa has allowed alumni, students and scholars, alike, to share unique experiences as they enjoy the spectacle of Italy.

With hopes of leading universities in global engagement, Georgetown has recently established itself in Shanghai, China in partnership with Fudan University.

This location works with a variety of Georgetown units to achieve goals in China, which include: coordinating activities and events with Fudan University, developing new initiatives, establishing new channels for recruiting Georgetown students, faculty and researchers, organizing visits of Georgetown delegations to China and vice-versa, as well as supporting collaboration projects between Georgetown faculty and colleagues at Chinese institutions.
