She Did It Again: Britney Spears Lands Back on Top

Britney Spears is an icon. Since the release of her first single twelve years ago, she has taken the music industry by storm. No part of her life, public or private, has gone undocumented. She has released seven studio albums, toured the world many times over, and remains an unstoppable force.

Britney's career has been successfully controversial, maintaining a careful balance of intrigue and notoriety. She has been raising eyebrows since early in her career, as seen by the provocative school girl outfit in her first music video, "...Baby One More Time". It is her ability to raise eyebrows and still keep audiences interested that has made Britney Spears a lasting star.

At Sunday night's (August 28) MTV Video Music Awards, Britney was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award -- not bad for a 29-year-old. She also went home with the award for Best Pop Video, proving that Britney still has it. She isn't an icon of years past; she continues to rule the charts.

Britney's iconic style is almost as notable as her record-breaking career. Everyone has their favorite Britney look. It could be her days as a school girl, the red leather cat suit, that nude shimmery VMA outfit, the infamous pink wig (or perhaps the even more infamous bald head), or even the tough underground apocalyptic outfit in the video for "Till The World Ends". Whatever your favorite look, there is no question her style is iconic.

Now, Britney is influencing a new generation of stars. Selena Gomez, Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, and Demi Lovato have all listed her as an influence. Demi Lovato recently called Britney "the epitome of pop." If this weren't enough, at this years VMA's, Lady Gaga (as Joe Calderone) noted that the music industry wouldn't be the same without Britney.

There isn't much Britney hasn't done successfully. She has released a string of number one singles and albums, performed numerous sold-out concert tours, been in movies and highly successful TV appearances, co-authored a book, and has released nine different fragrances. Who wouldn't list Britney Spears as influence?

So, what is next? Her latest single is rumored to be the sultry, dance-infused ballad, "Criminal", and her lucrative Femme Fatale Tour will make its way through Europe at the end of September.

As if there was ever any doubt, Britney Spears is a pop music legend, and it looks like she is here to stay.
