IAC activist Anjali Damania, who targeted Gadkari, faces heat over farm land deal

India Against Corruption (IAC) activist Anjali Damania, who blew the lid off the multi-crore irrigation scam in Maharashtra, is now facing questions over her purchase of farm land in 2007.

Damania had allegedly bought 7 acre land in Karjat in Maharashtra from two farmers and later got changed its use to non-agricultural purpose.

The land had 39 contiguous plots. Soon a project of private villas, named Alpine Village, came up on it. The project belongs to SVV Developers of which Damania is director. Till August 2011, 37 of these plots were sold to private individuals.

The two farmers said they had sold their plots at the rate of Rs 75,000 acre to Damania. She, however, said that she did not remember at what amount she sold the plots to private buyers.

Damania also said that she was being targeted because she had exposed the irrigation scam. She also said that what needed to be blamed was the government policy of converting agricultural land to non-agricultural land.

IAC leader Arvind Kejriwal, on the basis of findings of Damania, had recently attacked BJP president Nitin Gadkari accusing him of grabbing farmers’ unused 100 acre land that was acquired by the state government for an irrigation project.

An inquiry into her plots was initiated earlier this year which revealed that Damania had provided inadequate proof of being a farmer. Thirty-six plots bought by her claiming to be a farmer were taken back.

Damania has been fighting for her 30 acre land in Karjat that is under threat of being submerged if the proposed Kondhane Dam is constructed. Damania has alleged large scale corruption in the construction of the dam.

On October 17, when quizzed about her land deals during a press conference in Delhi with Kejriwal, Damania had defended herself, saying she did nothing wrong and her transactions were transparent.
