Chances are good that there's a direct connection to Northeast Ohio. That's because the world's No. 1 liquid crystal research center is at Kent State University: the Liquid Crystal Institute (LCI).
"LCI is considered the Mecca of liquid crystals around the world," says Bahman Taheri, adjunct faculty for LCI and CEO of AlphaMicron Inc. in Kent. His eyewear company spun off from the institute in 1997. Considering the fact that 95 percent of liquid crystal display manufacturing is located in the Far East, he adds, that's a fairly significant accomplishment for a university in Ohio.
Located in its own building on Kent's campus, the Liquid Crystal Institute houses 70 to 80 researchers, faculty and support staff. (Numbers vary depending on annual research grant funding.) Scientists perform basic research on the physics, …
