I was born with the name David Green in Poland on October 16th 1886.
I grew up being a passionate Zionist and socialist.
I moved to Palestine in 1906, but I was exiled in 1915, because I was viewed as an enemy.
Before the year 1920 I did many different things, such as teaching at a school in Warsaw, studying in Istanbul, getting married in America and I even joined a unit of the British army.
In the 1920s I created trade unions and in 1935 I was elected chairman of the Jewish Agency.
In 1948 I was very central to the creation of the State of Israel.
I was Prime Minister two different times, for a total of 13 years.
In 1968 I helped to create the Labor Party.
In 1970 I retired from politics and lived out the rest of my life on Kibbutz Sde Boker.
I am:
David Ben Gurion
David Ben Gurion was the very first Prime Minister of Israel. Many people feel that his work saved the Jewish people. Thanks to Ben Gurion, after 2000 years of exile, Jews could finally come back home. Ben Gurion was born in Poland in 1886 and his family was very Zionist. His mother died when he was 11 years old. As a young man, Ben Gurion traveled a lot before coming to live in Palestine after World War I. Ben Gurion had watched the Arabs fight against the arrival of more Jews into the country. He also felt shocked and angry about how Jews were killed during the Holocaust in Europe without being able to fight back. This made him believe that the Jews needed their own country to be safe. He became Prime Minister of Israel when it was created in 1948 and was seen as a strong and sometimes forceful leader. He was a leader during the War of Independence and also in the Suez crisis of 1956. As Prime Minister, Ben Gurion started a number of projects. He believed in settling Jews in the Negev and brought water to the area. He also helped to bring Jews over from the Arab countries in Operation Magic Carpet. Although Ben Gurion stepped down as Prime Minister in 1953, he returned two years later. After a total of 13 years as leader, Ben Gurion resigned in 1963 and retired from politics in 1970. He died in 1973.
