‘Shocking’

The figures mentioned in the article “Traffic accidents kill nearly 8,000 in last 10 years — PSD” (The Jordan Times, November 20, 2012) are absolutely shocking.

As a pedestrian, I notice every day that few people wear seatbelts while driving. Belts help save lives in many cases.

I also continually see children in the front passenger seat without wearing the seatbelt, or even standing up with their heads next to the dashboard. Don’t parents see how dangerous this is? Small children should be in the back anyway, in child seats.

A vigorous campaign should be carried out by the Traffic Department again to crack down on people not wearing seatbelts.

If traffic lights were reinstalled at the Seventh Circle, the police officers who direct the traffic there now could be put to more use walking up and down Abdullah Ghosheh Street when cars are often at a standstill, waiting to pass the roundabout.
