    1972 – Burundi’s President Michel Micombero leads a genocidal campaign against educated Hutus and military Hutus… 250,000 are killed.

    Early 1980s – Bush War in Uganda led by Yowero Museveni vs Milton Obote. One of the factions with Museveni is the Rwandan Tutsi former ruling class exiled in 1959. Paul Kagame is an important leader in this group.

    1986 – Yowero Museveni prevails and becomes President of Uganda. Kagame later becomes chief of Ugandan intelligence.

    August 1988 – More tribal fighting in Burundi.

    1 October 1990 – Detachment of Ugandan military invades Rwanda as the RPF. Kagame at this time is in Ft. Leavenworth getting US training, and the RPF leader dies in the initial invasion. Kagame quickly takes over.

    Until Feb 1993 the Anglo-American powers enthusiastically back the RPF and essentially demand that Rwandan President Habyarimana capitulate to them. In Feb 1993, the RPF go on a major rampage of atrocities through northern Rwanda killing many thousands. Anglo-American powers try to reward this atrocity by forcing Habyarimana’s capitulation.

    Oct 1993 – Burundi’s Hutu president assassinated by Tutsi army, more massacres and thousands of displaced Hutus end up in southern Rwanda.

    6 April 1994 – RPF assassinates two Hutu presidents in one shot including Habyarimana. The RPF offensive begins and in retaliation, extremist Hutu militias begin the massacres.

    Later in 1994 the RPF takes over. 1 million refugees in Goma.

    Late 1996 – First invasion of Zaire by RPF and Uganda allied with Laurent Kabila, a long time failed guerrilla leader. Half of the refugees end up back in Rwanda, 500,000 others are driven across the Congo.

    17 March 1997 – Kisangani Massacre by RPF kills tens of thousands of refugees.

    In May, Mobutu is ousted and the RPF and Kabila prevail.

    July 1998 – Kabila demands that RPF soldiers leave. RPF complies.

    2 August 1998 – RPF launches second invasion of the Congo. West cheers the events, blames Kabila for the Kisangani massacre, are horrified when Angola and Zimbabwe joins the war with Kabila.
