Info

Adam Morrow, an IPS News journalist based in Cairo, discusses the massive demonstrations in Egypt by both pro and anti government protestors; indications that the Egyptian police have “gone rogue” and are actively undermining President Morsi; the third-party agitators trying to sow discord and violence in Egypt; big problems in Egypt’s constitutional convention; and contradictory conspiracy theories about the US either being in cahoots with the Muslim Brotherhood, or secretly aiding the anti-Morsi protestors.

  • Hi Scott,

Learned you don’t read comments so this will fall on deaf ears. Don’t see a link to contact you.

More informed sources can be gleaned from presstv and RT.

  • As usual, Adam Morrow gives a good picture of what’s going on, what the different sides are saying, and what he thinks is closest to the truth. What he says corresponds with what the Egyptians I know are saying. Most of the Western media (and governments) feel comfortable with people like Baradei, who were rejected by the Egyptian people themselves. As Adam said, these ‘remnants’ know that if a referendum is held, their view will be the losing one – which is why they’re doing everything they can to prevent the referendum, after failing in their attempts to prevent a Constitution from being drafted.

Scott’s references to Morsi as a ‘total kook’, ‘bonkers’ and ‘a nut’ are ignorant and arrogant… but then I don’t listen to what he says anyway.

  • Just listened to 4 podcasts on this in row. This was real, you-are-there, reporting. Nice catch! Good luck to Mr.Morrow and the Egyptian people.

Here’s a summary of alternative media viewpoints I’ve heard this morning:

    1) The Muslim Brotherhood is controlled by the Nazi (now by Nazis recruited into the CIA) and is out to end the Camp David accords and attack Israel.

    2) The liberal and leftists are pathologically sabotaging the Muslim Brotherhood even thought it represents the best chance to resist American Imperialism.

    3) The Muslim Brotherhood made a devil’s deal with the IMF and is instituting austerity (i.e removing Nasser’s subsidies for heating/food) and this is causing popular unrest.

Adam Morrow basically confirms the 2nd point and mentions the IMF loan. Perhaps his confirmed reports of paid agitators could be traced back to the 1st point: Israeli intelligence sowing chaos. Fears of Morsi abrogating the Camp David accord might also explain the Time magazine hit-piece. (Mixing on- and off-the-record comments is a common media assassination tactic – this method decided the 2008 Canadian election for example).

Morsi has stated he is -not- out to end the Accords (well, possibly amend but not end). But Morsi ties with Hamas and headlines like ‘Camp David Death Watch’ on neo-con websites point towards a different perception in certain quarters.

Synthesis: Morsi is both a compromise candidate and internationally co-opted but the majority of Egyptians are OK with that and just want stability. Israel-first elements are fearful of any change to the Mid-East geopolitical scene and rather have chaos in Egypt if then cannot get in a pro-Israel ruler. Left-liberal Egyptians (perhaps unwittingly or perhaps paid) and IMF austerity are providing the fault-line that are being exploited,
