NOTE ON THE PROPOSAL DEADLINE FOR REU SITES

Two due dates are listed for REU Site proposals each year. The May deadline applies only to REU Site proposals that require access to Antarctica, which must be submitted to one of the Antarctic Sciences Division (ANT) research programs in the Office of Polar Programs (OPP). The fall deadline (which is September 12 in 2012, and the fourth Wednesday in August in 2013 and beyond) applies to all other REU Site proposals.

NOTE ON INDIRECT COSTS IN REU SITE PROPOSALS

In proposals submitted in response to solicitation NSF 12-569, indirect costs should be charged in accordance with the proposing organization's negotiated indirect cost rate agreement and the approved base as stated in that agreement. Questions about whether particular items (e.g., student stipends, housing costs, meal costs, travel costs) should be excluded from the application of indirect costs should be directed first to the office responsible for developing the organization's indirect cost rate proposal, and then--if that office cannot resolve the question--to the cognizant Federal agency responsible for negotiating the indirect cost rate agreement.

For all organizations, the underlying principle remains that the negotiated indirect cost rate agreement and the application base specified in that agreement determine whether indirect costs can be claimed on a particular expense line item. There is no overall NSF-imposed limitation that all Participant Support Costs are excluded from receiving indirect costs. Budget line items F (Participant Support Costs: F1 Stipend, F2 Travel, F3 Subsistence, and F4 Other) may or may not bear indirect costs in accordance with the negotiated rate agreement and the application base specified therein.

Important Notice to Proposers

A revised version of the NSF Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide (PAPPG), NSF 13-1, was issued on October 4, 2012 and is effective for proposals submitted, or due, on or after January 14, 2013. Please be advised that, depending on the specified due date, the guidelines contained in NSF 13-1 may apply to proposals submitted in response to this funding opportunity.

Please be aware that significant changes have been made to the PAPPG to implement revised merit review criteria based on the National Science Board (NSB) report, National Science Foundation's Merit Review Criteria: Review and Revisions. While the two merit review criteria remain unchanged (Intellectual Merit and Broader Impacts), guidance has been provided to clarify and improve the function of the criteria. Changes will affect the project summary and project description sections of proposals. Annual and final reports also will be affected.

SYNOPSIS

The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation. REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the REU program. This solicitation features two mechanisms for support of student research: (1) REU Sites are based on independent proposals to initiate and conduct projects that engage a number of students in research. REU Sites may be based in a single discipline or academic department or may offer interdisciplinary or multi-department research opportunities with a coherent intellectual theme. Proposals with an international dimension are welcome. (2) REU Supplements may be included as a component of proposals for new or renewal NSF grants or cooperative agreements or may be requested for ongoing NSF-funded research projects.

Undergraduate student participants in either REU Sites or REU Supplements must be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or permanent residents of the United States.

Students do not apply to NSF to participate in REU activities. Students apply directly to REU Sites or to NSF-funded investigators who receive REU Supplements. To identify appropriate REU Sites, students should consult the directory of active REU Sites on the Web at http://www.nsf.gov/crssprgm/reu/reu_search.cfm.

This program provides educational opportunities for  Undergraduate Students . This program provides indirect funding for undergraduate students to participate in research.
