Give your puppy a play date

We’re still supposed to have mild weather this weekend.

Most reports I’ve read have it scheduled to be cloudy, chance of rain — with temperatures in the low 50s.

If you could avoid the raindrops, it might be good time to give your puppy a “January thaw” play date.

Here is a list of the dog runs in our area:

Bergen County

–Sam Nelkin County Park, Rose Street Wallington.

–Joseph A. Carucci, Jr, Area, Riverside County Park, Riverside Avenue, Lyndhurst.

–Wooddale County Park, Prospect Avenue, Woodcliff Lake.

–Henry Hoebel Area, Overpeck County Park, Fort Lee Road, Leonia.

–Wild Duck Pond Area, Saddle River County Park, Ridgewood.

Passaic County

–Goffle Brook Park, Lafayette Avenue, Hawthorne.

Permit me to remind you

Here’s something to add to your New Year’s resolution list: Don’t forget to re-new your dogs’ licenses.

Well, I guess it is not a resolution per se – so add it to your list of “things to do.”

Most towns these days don’t require yearly renewals — usually, it is every couple years or so.

Check with your local authorities on cost, protocol – what shots your dog may or may not need.

One thing I don’t like about our town’s procedure is that it does not keep track of the dogs name and the license. Since they don’t, we usually have to go fishing around to find the actual license and paperwork and try and figure out who the renewal is for.

Would it be that difficult for them to put the name, age or breed on the forms?

Taking care of “business”

I tried to take of advantage of the warmer weather we’ve been enjoying the week  and walked my dogs “the extra mile” this morning.

Unfortunately –  for me — my mind did not go the extra mile and I forgot to bring the extra emergency clean-up bags.

Is there anything more embarrassing than having your dog(s) do their business on a neighbor’s lawn or sidewalk and not having a bag to clean it up?

I am glad it was early morning, I don’t believe most of the block was awake yet.

I was a good neighbor though; I went back to the spot(s) and picked up the “business” on my way in to work.

There’s  suppose to be mild temperatures the next few days.

Memo to myself: Remember to put emergency poopy pouches into my jacket pockets.

Looking for a new ruff ruff

Odie and Ollie.

Yesterday, we got a L.L. Bean spring 2013 “Home” catalogue in the mail.

We’re not in the market for any furniture or bed sheets at the moment — but our dogs do need new collars.

I am looking to get them red (Odie), yellow (Ollie) and green (Peabody) collars, respectively (traffic light, get it?).

On Page 56 of the catalogue, Bean offers personalized web collars and leashes for $19.95 each. They come in red, palm green, sunset orange, pink flamingo, blue lagoon and blue — unfortunately, no yellow.

The catalogue also offers up fleece pet blankets ($29.95 to $79.95); dog beds, both theraputic and premium ($69 to $319); and place mats ($24.95 to $54).

Advice for new pet parents from Petco

With many New Jersey families welcoming pets into their homes over the holidays, it’s important to educate new pet parents that keeping your furry loved one happy and healthy means so much more than just feeding them the right nutrition.

Petco wants to help simplify things for new pet owners and has come up with the below four tips to ensure a happy, healthy and whole life.

These tips include keeping pets physically fit, mentally alert, socially engaged and emotionally happy.

–Physical health — Most pet parents know proper diet and exercise is vital, but they may not realize that grooming and playtime is also essential to their pet’s health. For instance, brushing and combing your dog helps keep the coat clean and healthy and stimulates the skin, allowing the natural oils to circulate to the coat. New pets are full of energy, especially if the adopted dog is a puppy. Keep them entertained and exercised with fun toys that are safe for indoor use.

–Mental Health — Keeping a pet mentally stimulated is a must to avoid destructive behavior such as going to the bathroom in the house or destroying upholstery. Ten minutes of thinking play can equal 45 minutes of active/outdoor play for pets. Toys and puzzles will keep pets occupied and mentally stimulated for long periods of time so they don’t take out their boredom on furniture.

–Social Health — In addition to caring for a pet’s physical and mental health, teaching pets to interact and play well with others is essential to being a great pet parent. With so many dog parks and pet-friendly establishments popping up, it’s especially important that dogs learn how to play well with others to keep public appearances positive experiences. If you already have another dog in the home or your pup has a pal, have some fun with this 3-way tug toy where everyone can get in on the action.

–Emotional Health — Although pets enjoy being a part of the action, they also need downtime, which means a safe, comfortable place where they can take a time out. Another way to bond with your pet is working together on training techniques. For example, the “Nothing Exercise” will help overexcited/hyper dogs learn to be calm and relaxed around people. This is especially helpful with dogs that have been adopted since they may have spent a lot of time in a kennel and without too much human interaction, so when they see a person, they get over excited and jump, etc.

That’s how “Jersey Dogs” do it …

Here’s a recent story by Staff Writer Deena Yellin.

TENAFLY — Willow, a four-year-old black Doberman-Spaniel mix, is a rambunctious dog who gets herself into trouble by jumping on strangers, pulling on her leash and placing bones in and under furniture.

But during the final moments of 2012, says her owner, she earned the status of hero.

That’s because on New Year’s Eve, Willow saved her neighbor’s Tenafly Road home from burning to the ground, according to her owner, attorney Eve Bolkin.

“If it wasn’t for her, we never would have noticed the fire as early as we did,” said Bolkin.

About 11 p.m., Bolkin was watching a New Year’s Eve special and waiting for the ball to drop in Manhattan when she heard Willow scratching at the back door to come inside. But when Bolkin opened the door to let her in, Willow refused to budge. Bolkin turned back to the television. But again, Willow scratched insistently at the back door.

Take the ASPCA Rachael Ray challenge

Rachael Ray and her pit bull, Izzy.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has announced that applications are now open in the “2013 ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge,” with $600,000 in prize grants to help shelters save more homeless cats and dogs.

The ASPCA and Ray will award a $100,000 grand prize to the shelter contestant that achieves the greatest increase in lives saved during this three-month period. The contestant that does the best job of engaging its community members in helping to save more animals will win $25,000. Those organizations that do the best in their divisions will be eligible for between $10,000 and $25,000 in additional grants. In total, $600,000 in grant funding will be awarded for increases in animal lives saved, as well as a photo contest and general participation.

Applications will be reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis until Wed., Jan. 23 at 11:59 p.m. or until each division has 10 confirmed contestants, as well as a wait-list contestant, whichever comes first.

Shelters whose applications are accepted will go on to compete in the challenge, where they will work to save more animals – during the months of June, July and August – than they did over the same three-month period in 2012. Last year’s competing shelters saved more than 56,000 cats and dogs during the contest, an increase of 14,376 over the same period in 2011.

An expression of concern from my little dog

My youngest dog, Peabody (a deaf dachshund of about three years old) left a sheet of paper on the bottom of his crate on New Year’s morning.

No, it wasn’t soiled from the night before. It was his 2013 New Year’s resolutions list.

Here is it what he wrote:

I resolve to …

– Stop chewing my water bowl. I will continue to carry it around the house when it is empty, however.

– Pee in a puddle the next time I have an accident in the house. I will not spray around the rug or floor like a water sprinkler, like I usually do.

– Refrain from barking when there is nothing there — even if there is a change in lighting.

– Stop attacking my brothers ears (Odie and Ollie)when they come back from a walk. I will also try and stop barking like maniac when they are out. I realize they will return at some point.

– Shake the wet and snow off my back outside the house, before I go inside.

– Enjoy belly rub time. Don’t fight it like it is torture.

– There is an end to my leash, even if I run full speed for exercise.

– Clean up me toys, after I’ve strewn them across the floor. I will also not swallow anymore toy pieces.

– Stop chewing the throw rugs and comforter. I don’t always need something in my mouth.

– Contine to offer my unconditional love to my family.
