Boys hoops: Passaic Tech withstands DePaul’s comeback; earns biggest win of season

WAYNE — Passaic Tech played perhaps its three best consecutive quarters of basketball tonight at DePaul.

The Bulldogs nearly unraveled offensively late in the fourth quarter, but they held on to upset DePaul, ranked fourth in The Record Top 25, 63-59, in a Big North, non-division road game. Junior guard Zaheem Beal’s follow of a miss by Passaic Tech senior guard Isaac Williams with 23 seconds to play enabled the Bulldogs to reclaim the lead after DePaul went on a 15-1 run late in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 59 with 44 seconds left. WRESTLING: Dual or Tournament?

Is it too early to start thinking about the wrestling tournament season? For some teams, the answer is: Duh, we’re in the midst of the most important part of the dual meet season, how could we think of tournaments now? For others, teams that don’t have the depth to compete against the best, the tournament season couldn’t come soon enough.

So what I’m wondering today is what do you prefer, a dual meet or a tournament? They both bring different excitement and different emotions and I’m looking forward to hearing matters most to you.

Do you prefer dual meets or tournaments?

Forecasting 01.15.13 — Boys basketball highlights Tuesday’s action

A preview of what to look forward to in North Jersey high school sports on Tuesday, Jan. 15. All content below written by each respective sport’s staff beat writer(s).

BOYS BASKETBALL

No. 7 Passaic Tech (7-4) at No. 4 DePaul (10-1): PCT must score in transition, because DePaul owns an eight-game win streak and held its last seven foes to less than 50 points. Writer Keith Idec will cover the game.

No. 1 Teaneck (8-2) at Paramus Catholic (5-7): Teaneck has not played since a Jan. 6 loss to St. Benedict’s. PC has fought through a tough early-season schedule and 0-6 start. Writer Greg Mattura will cover the game. Continue reading

Splash Talk: Who had the best days at the Boys Big North Championships?

Alright, so I re-arranged the best individual event times for the boys, had Sunday’s Big North Championships not been separated by divisions. And it was Bergen Catholic, the Division 1 champion, which would have led all teams with 146 points. Demarest, the Division 4 champion, would have finished in second place, with 119, while DePaul and Tenafly would have tied for third, both with 92 points. Don Bosco would have rounded out the Top 5, with 72 points. Complete would-be cumulative team scores can be found at the bottom of this page.  Continue reading

Splash Talk: Who had the best days at the Girls Big North Championships?

I took all the results from all four divisions and came up with a true Big North Top 12 in each individual event. I even tallied up the scores, awarding 12 points for a first place finish, 11 points for a second place finish, and so on. No surprise here, Immaculate Heart, the Division 1 champion, would have totaled 224 points had it gone against every school in the conference. Northern Highlands, the Division 3 champion, would have finished in second place, with 145 points. And Wayne Hills, the Division 2 champion, would have finished in third with 70 points. Keep in mind, these are very unofficial. But it’s pretty interesting to see the top 12 in each event. The would-be cumulative team scores are at the very bottom of the page. The boys edition will be up tomorrow. Continue reading

WRESTLING: Lodi’s perfect start

Lost in the wildness of another quad-filled wrestling weekend was Lodi’s ascension into legit contender status. It is undefeated this year as a team, off to a 8-0 start, and swept a quad with Demarest, Paramus Catholic and Ramapo this weekend at home.

The importance of the Demarest match cannot be overstated. Not only does it give the Rams a win over a Record Top 25 team, it also gives them a boost in the upcoming power point rankings and the all-important head-to-head win for states. These two teams and in the same section of states, and if Demarest finishes one spot ahead of Lodi in power points, Lodi jumps them.

That could be a big advantage come seeding time. For now, here’s how Lodi’s gotten off to such a good start.  Continue reading

Splash Talk: Cleaning out the notebook — Big North Championships Review

Demarest’s Terry Li won two individual events and was part of two more relay-winning teams during Sunday’s Big North Championships, leading the Norsemen to a Division 4 title with 361 points. (GEORGE McNISH/Special to The Record)

For full results, including team scores and individual event results, CLICK HERE. Here’s everything I gathered during my 12-hour work day, checking out both Big North Championship meets at Passaic Tech and Felix Festa. If a school record was broken on Sunday, e-mail at conrad@northjersey.com giving me details and I’ll add it as soon as possible.

DIVISION 1 GIRLS RECAP

I saw the first half of this meet before heading over to Felix Festa for the Division 3 and 4 meet, and came away amazed at the times these IHA swimmers were putting up. And aside from the times, it seemed every swimmer coach Jason Schlereth put out there would just blow the field away. Sara Nestrowitz was probably the biggest IHA star on Sunday, as the junior won two individual events, both sprints — the 50 Free (26.11) and 100 Free (55.57) — and was also part of the winning 200 Medley (1:56.85) and 200 Free Relay (1:48.09). Nestrowitz was the only IHA swimmer to record four first-place finishes, but Emilia Weihenig, also only a junior, was part of three and took second in another — the 500 Free, three seconds off teammate’s Jillian Calocinco‘s 5:31.61. Weihenig won the 200 IM (2:18.78) and part of the winning 200 Free and 400 Free (3:48.66) Relay teams. Taking it easy with a semi-injured ankle, Michelle Kim, another junior, only participated in two relays — the 200 Medley and 400 Free. In the end, it was another dominant performance from IHA, as the Blue Eagles took first in all 11 events, racking up 463 points. In fact, Immaculate Heart finished in the top two in 10 of 11 events, too. Its’ closest competition came from Paramus Catholic, which finished with 318 points. And it doesn’t seem like IHA is about to fade anytime soon, as the roster is filled with an abundance of underclassmen. Senior Valerie Lauer had a nice day as well, winning the 100 Fly (1:02.22), finished second to Nestrowitz in the 50 Free by 0.57 (26.68) and was part of two relay-winning teams. Continue reading

FB: Jeune to Georgia Tech

Ricky Jeune, one of the premier wide receivers in North Jersey, is taking his talent to Georgia Tech.
The St. Joseph senior from Spring Valley, N.Y. spent the weekend in Atlanta, making a verbal commitment to the Yellow Jackets on Sunday. He’s one of three receivers Georgia Tech has added for the class of 2017 in a bid to bolster the passing game.
“I went for my visit, and I really liked it,” Jeune said Sunday night while on his way back from Georgia. “I had a great time. I love the facility, and it’s not only about football.”
The 6-foot-3, 205-pound Jeune was a big reason why the Green Knights, No. 1 in the North Jersey final football Top 25, was able to beat Don Bosco and Bergen Catholic last season en route to a second straight Non-Public Group 3 title. He earned All-Bergen County honors, catching 36 passes for 862 yards and 10 touchdowns.
You can read more about Jeune’s decision in Monday’s Record.

Girls basketball: Eastside 49, Bloomfield Tech 38

Eastside played well offensively and defensively and picked up a nice 49-38 win over Bloomfield Tech Saturday. Bloomfield Tech was coming off a huge win over East Orange, which has beaten Kennedy and DePaul already this season.
And Bloomfield Tech has one of the top players in the state in junior standout Ashunae Durant, who averages 18.9 points and 11.1 rebounds and just scored her 1,000th point last week.
Durant scored a game-high 25 points, but none of her teammates scored more than four points.
Taylor Brown had 16 points, Kayla Diaz had 13 and Nia Adams had nine points for Eastside, which is riding a four-game winning streak and is the No. 10 team in the Record Top 25.
You can read more about Eastside in Sunday’s Record.

Splash Talk: News, Notes and Scores Around North Jersey from Jan. 10-Jan. 11

Paramus’ Eric Kim is a big reason behind the Spartan’s solid start to the 2012-2013 season. Coach Tim Donohue thinks Kim, and teammate Harold Choo, could make some noise at next week’s Bergen County Meet of Champions. (DEMITRIUS BALEVSKI/Staff Photographer)

Before I begin, make sure to cast your votes on the post above — or CLICK HERE — regarding who you think will win Sunday’s Big North Championships. I’m interested to see who everyone thinks are the favorites heading into the event.

Anyway, today’s news comes out of Paramus, thanks to an e-mail from coach Tim Donohue. The Spartans’ boys team is having its best season in a long time, currently sporting a 5-3 record and have won three in a row as of Thursday after suffering tough losses to Bergen County powers — Bergen Catholic, Ramapo and Ridgewood. Leading the Paramus emergence has been senior Eric Kim and junior Harold Choo, both who should be in contention for county titles in their respective races later this season. According to Donohue, Kim is an “extremely versatile swimmer” and can swim any event and is willing to do so depending on the meet. He excels in the 200 IM, 100 Free and 100 Back and has been “under 2 minutes in the 200 IM” and “under 50 seconds” in the 100 Free. “Those are very impressive times and he’s a fun swimmer to watch,” Donohue said. Kim has lost only one dual meet individual race during his high school career and he’s looking to end his career on a high note.

As for Choo, “he’s been a standout since his freshman year,” Donohue said. His best events are in the 100 Breast, 200 IM and 200 Free. “Like Eric, he is able to swim any event that we need on a particular day and has lost only one individual event at dual meets [in his career]. He, too, should do very well at the county meet this year in both of his individual events.”

WRESTLING

Bergen Catholic’s returning state champion Johnny Sebastian will lead the Crusaders in their big quad meet today in Brick. (LESLIE BARBARO/Staff Photographer)

A day of quads will be highlighted by top-ranked Bergen Catholic’s trip down south to Brick Memorial to face Brick Memorial, Toms River South and Manalapan. Brick is 9-0 and coming off a huge 36-27 victory over St. Peter’s. They are led by Joe Ghione at 126 and Jared Staub at 132, Cliff Ruggiero at 145, Joe Beverly at 160 and Tyler Richardson at 170. Toms River South is 7-1 led by unbeaten returning state champion BJ Clagon at 145. Kevin Corrigan is unbeaten as well at 113 as is Joe Salvato at 160 and freshman Owen McClave has one loss at 106. Bergen Catholic (5-1 going into Friday night’s matchup against Wayne Valley), whose only loss is to powerful South Plainfield, is deep throughout the lineup, led by returning state champ Johnny Sebastian at 182. Freshman Nick Suriano has been dominant at 106, and the Crusaders also have strangth up top with Christian Jenco and Carmine Goldsack.

In other action, Emerson/Park Ridge and Bogota/Weehawken will travel to River Dell for a tri meet that will say a lot about where each team stands in the dual meet season. River Dell is unbeaten at 3-0 while Bogota is 8-1 and Emerson is 3-4.

Brian Giuffra will be writing a feature story on the Demarest wrestling team and their strong start to the season for Sunday’s paper. They are in a quad with Lodi, Ramapo and Paramus Catholic. Continue reading
