Giresse Refuses Libya Offer; Takes Up Coaching Post with Senegal |

The Libyan Football Federation has been dealt a blow to its hopes of appointing former French international footballer and one of Africa's best known coaches Alain Giresse as national coach. Following discussions in December, and after making a visit to Libya to assess whether he should take up the post, the talks broke down and Giresse urned down Libya's offer instead opting to take up a similar post with Senegal.

Libya's national football team will finish the year 2012 in 54th position from among the 207 members of the International Football Federation, FIFA. That means it gained nine places in the overall standing since a year ago when it finished 2011 in 63rd place.

English Premier League side and last season's UEFA Champions League winners, Chelsea managed to qualify for the final of the FIFA Club World Cup 2012 in Japan and a meeting with Corinthians of Brazil following a 3-1 easy victory Thursday over Mexico's Monterrey. The other finalists, Corinthians got through after a 1-0 victory over CAF champions Al Ahly of Egypt.

Libyan to Meet Tunisian, Sudanese Opponents in CAF Club Competitions |

AFTER an absence of one year, Libyan football clubs will resume their participation in the African club competitions organised by the African Confederation, CAF, with Al Ittihad of Tripoli in the Champions League, and Benghazi's Al Nasser in the Confederation Cup. Both will be in action when the competitions kick off next February against opposition from Tunisia (for Al Ahli) and from Sudan for Al Nasser.

As previously announced in The Tripoli Post, despite the fact that domestic competitions in Libya are still suspended, the Libya Football Federation has confirmed that Tripoli football club Al Ittihad, and Benghazi's Al Nasser, will be competing in the important CAF competitions for clubs, the African Champions League and the African Confederation Cup.

The failure of Libya to reach the 2013 African Cup of Nations finals in South Africa next January following home and away defeats against Algeria in the qualifiers, has cost Libya's head coach Abdulhafeedh Arbeesh his job. He is expected to be replaced by former French international footballer Alain Giresse, but the Libyan Football Federation, LFF has confirmed that Arbeesh will be kept as the Frenchman's assistant coach.
