With the 2014 US troop pullout looming,
American and NATO forces are already
handing over control of some of the most
volatile regions of Afghanistan to the
Afghan army. Northern Helmand is the
hotbed for the insurgency. A surge of
some 30,000 American troops since 2009,
have helped push the Taliban back. Now
the Afghan army is assuming control and
taking over control of US bases. Many
say the future of the country lies in
whether the Afghan army can hold the
ground in these key areas.
