Are unpaid internships unfair?

Would you work for free if it meant making valuable connections in your career? For some graduates, it’s their only option. As competition for jobs remains fierce, many turn to unpaid internships to gain experience. But here’s the question: does it help a person’s career or is it a time-honoured tradition of exploiting those who are desperate for a leg up on the competition?
