Residence Hall Government

The residence hall student government system at the University of Michigan includes Hall Councils, Multicultural Councils and the Residence Halls Association (RHA).  Participation in these groups provides opportunities to explore and initiate social, educational, political and recreational programs on campus and to influence Housing policites.

We encourage you to get involved in the residence hall student government system. By participating, you will be among the “leaders and best.”

Hall Councils

These councils act as the central student government for each hall. Their business focus is on hall programming and on bringing students’ concerns to the professional staff in their building. Serving on your Hall Council will provide you with opportunities to learn about the University and to build your skills in program development, management, presentation and leadership.

Multicultural Councils

In general, the Multicultural Councils focus on the quality of the community in their respective halls. More specifically, they are concerned with the quality of the living and learning experiences of minority students. Acting in advocacy, activism, educational and support roles, the Multicultural Councils provide ways for all students to explore who they are and how they relate to others.

Residence Halls Assocation

RHA provides student governance for the entire University Housing residence hall system. The group represents nearly 10,000 students to the greater University community. RHA consists of an executive board and an Assembly elected from each hall. Through legislation, committees and policy development, RHA works closely with Housing Administration toward continuous improvement.

Annually, RHA sponsors, the Residence Halls Linens Program, where incoming students can purchase extra-long linens, and other room essentials, before move-in.  Also, RHA manages the programming and current listings for the Residence Hall Movie Channel.
