Corsica : a mountain in the sea
Heavenly beaches, unspoilt creeks, steep mountains, impenetrable scrub… Corsica is a mosaic of landscapes. It is both sea and mountain, hospitable and wild. A real "Beautiful Island"…
History and Geography
An island of mountain people
Corsica, 170 km from the southern French coast and 85 km from the Italian coast, has a rich and complex history. Its mainly mountainous relief led to a stock raising and mountain agriculture economy.
Cultural heritage
The Calvi Citadel
This symbol of the town was built in the 13th century, at the time of the Genoese occupation. It stands majestically on its rocky promontory. Behind its fortifications it shelters steep and narrow paved streets that lead to the former Governors' palace, the Oratoire Saint-Antoine and the Saint-Jean-Baptiste church.
Exceptional sites
The Sanguinaires archipelago
The 4 uninhabited islands, located at the entrance to the Gulf of Ajaccio, form a classified maritime site. They are a paradise of seabirds and dolphins and support more than 150 plant species.
Lifestyle
Culture and traditions
Corsican culture, solidly anchored in people's minds, is evident in the language. Secular and religious festivals take place throughout the year, to the sound of the traditional polyphonic songs that have long since crossed the regional borders.
Gastronomy
Locally rooted cookery
Corsican cookery involves the foods of a mountain people: local meals are based on pork products, sheep and goat's cheese, sweet chestnuts and olive oil. On the coast you can find Mediterranean cooking and the flavours of the South.
Events and festivals
Calvi jazz festival
This famous international festival brings together the best of the jazz scene over 8 days. The festival takes over the whole of the town, with musicians and jazz lovers populating the cafés and terraces.
